Samsung, SK Hynix Stocks Drop Ahead of Q3 Earnings

Shares of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix fell on Tuesday as investors turned cautious ahead of the companies’ third-quarter earnings reports.

The declines came despite broader strength across the semiconductor sector.

Samsung and SK Hynix Shares Fall

Samsung Electronics shares dropped 1.8%, while SK Hynix fell 3.4%.

The weakness in both major chipmakers helped push South Korea’s KOSPI index down by more than 1%.

Investors are now focused on upcoming earnings for clues about the strength of the memory-chip market and artificial intelligence demand.

Samsung Prepares to Report Q3 Results

Samsung is expected to release its preliminary third-quarter earnings later this week.

The company is forecast to deliver another strong quarter as demand for memory chips remains supported by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure.

SK Hynix is expected to publish its third-quarter results later in October. The company is also projected to report strong year-over-year growth following an eventful quarter for the chipmaker.

Strong Won and Bonus Costs Create Pressure

Despite expectations for solid results, several risks are keeping investors cautious.

One concern is the strength of the South Korean won. A stronger domestic currency can reduce the value of overseas revenue and earnings when they are converted back into won.

Samsung and SK Hynix could also face additional costs related to employee compensation.

Workers have reportedly sought larger bonuses following the significant profits generated from the artificial intelligence boom over the past year.

AI Chip Demand Remains a Key Concern

Investors are also watching for signs that AI-related semiconductor demand could begin to slow.

Concerns have increased following reports of delays involving several data center projects in the United States in recent months.

Any slowdown in data center construction could eventually affect demand for advanced memory chips and other components used in AI infrastructure.

Micron Earnings Offer Positive Signal

However, recent results from memory-chip rival Micron provided a more encouraging signal for the sector.

Micron’s latest earnings suggested that AI-driven demand remained strong through at least September. That could support significant year-over-year Q3 growth for both Samsung and SK Hynix.

Micron also expects memory-chip supply to remain tight for at least another year as artificial intelligence continues to absorb production capacity.

Such a supply environment could benefit Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix by supporting stronger demand and favorable pricing conditions.
