Elon Musk Pledges $10 Billion in SpaceX Shares to US Children

Elon Musk has pledged to distribute one SpaceX share to every child in the United States in 2027, potentially creating one of the largest individual stock donation initiatives in history.

The billionaire entrepreneur announced the plan on Monday, October 19, through his social media platform X. Based on SpaceX’s latest closing share price and the estimated number of American children, the proposed giveaway could be worth approximately $10.5 billion.

However, Musk has yet to explain how the shares would be distributed or which children would qualify for the program.

Elon Musk Announces $10.5 Billion SpaceX Share Giveaway

Musk revealed his intentions in an early Monday post on X, stating that he plans to give each American child one share from his personal SpaceX holdings next year.

He also suggested that the initiative could be the beginning of additional share distributions in the future.

According to US Census Bureau estimates, approximately 72 million people under the age of 18 live in the United States.

With SpaceX stock closing at $146.03 on Friday, distributing one share to each child would represent a total market value of roughly $10.5 billion.

Nevertheless, the final value of the proposed donation would depend on SpaceX’s share price when the distribution takes place.

Musk has not provided a detailed implementation schedule beyond his stated intention to begin the giveaway in 2027.

Who Will Qualify for Elon Musk’s SpaceX Shares?

Several important questions remain unanswered regarding the proposed SpaceX stock distribution.

For example, Musk has not clarified whether eligibility would extend to every child living in the United States or only to American citizens.

Additionally, the announcement did not specify whether particular age restrictions would apply or how families could claim the shares.

Another unresolved issue involves the legal and administrative structure of the initiative.

Because minors generally require custodial arrangements to hold and manage investment assets, the distribution could involve specialized investment accounts or another regulated structure.

However, no official eligibility rules, registration process or distribution mechanism have been announced.

Musk’s Pledge Follows Anthropic’s Public Benefit Fund Announcement

The SpaceX share giveaway proposal emerged shortly after artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced a major philanthropic initiative.

On Sunday, October 18, Anthropic disclosed plans to allocate 5% of its equity to a newly established public benefit fund, subject to shareholder approval.

The initiative is intended to support projects serving the broader public interest.

Responding to the announcement, Musk suggested that companies should consider distributing shares directly to the public rather than relying exclusively on philanthropic funds.

He subsequently indicated that he intended to follow this approach through his own SpaceX holdings.

The development highlights growing discussions among technology executives about how corporate wealth and the financial benefits of technological innovation could be shared more broadly.

SpaceX Donation Could Surpass Michael Dell’s Record Contribution

If Musk completes the proposed giveaway, its estimated value could substantially exceed other prominent commitments involving children’s investment accounts.

Michael Dell previously announced a $6.25 billion contribution to Trump Accounts, a government-supported savings and investment initiative for young Americans.

At approximately $10.5 billion, Musk’s proposed SpaceX donation would exceed Dell’s commitment by around $4.25 billion.

The amount would also represent roughly 1% of Musk’s estimated personal fortune, which Forbes recently valued at approximately $908.5 billion.

Meanwhile, the proposed transfer of 72 million shares would account for around 1.5% of his reported direct ownership of approximately 4.8 billion SpaceX shares.

Although the financial commitment would be substantial, Musk would retain the overwhelming majority of his current SpaceX holdings.

Could SpaceX Shares Be Distributed Through Trump Accounts?

One potential distribution method involves Trump Accounts, which were established under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

The program provides tax-advantaged investment accounts for eligible American children.

Under its federal contribution initiative, qualifying children born between 2025 and 2028 can receive an initial $1,000 government deposit.

More broadly, Trump Accounts can be established for eligible minors under the age of 18, with parents or guardians managing the accounts until adulthood.

The program also allows certain third-party contributions, creating opportunities for private donors to support children’s long-term savings.

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and her husband have already pledged more than $320 million in company stock to support Trump Accounts for over two million children from lower-income communities.

This earlier commitment provides a possible precedent for Musk’s much larger proposed initiative.

However, it remains unclear whether Musk will use Trump Accounts or establish a separate distribution system.

SpaceX Stock Investors Await Quarterly Earnings

While Musk’s announcement has attracted widespread attention, investors are also preparing for SpaceX’s upcoming quarterly earnings report.

The company, which began trading publicly on Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX in June 2026, is scheduled to release its latest financial results on Tuesday.

Ahead of the announcement, analysts have expressed optimism about SpaceX’s long-term business prospects, particularly its expansion into advanced computing infrastructure.

Evercore ISI recently increased its SpaceX price target to $275, citing opportunities associated with computing growth.

Morgan Stanley also raised its price target, highlighting the company’s potential involvement in distributed artificial intelligence inference.

SpaceX completed its initial public offering at $135 per share in June.

Since then, the stock has experienced considerable volatility, trading within a range of approximately $104.83 to $225.64.

Shares reached a post-IPO record closing price of $211.39 on June 16 before retreating.

Throughout October, SpaceX stock has generally traded between $145 and $165 as investors reassess its growth prospects and valuation.

The upcoming earnings release could therefore provide important information about the company’s financial performance, capital requirements and future expansion plans.

Meanwhile, Musk’s proposed $10.5 billion SpaceX share giveaway has introduced another major development for shareholders and American families to watch as additional details emerge.
