Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) shares rose 1.9% on Monday morning, outperforming a weaker technology sector after the company announced a massive $150 billion increase to its share repurchase program.
The expansion takes Nvidia’s total available buyback authorization to roughly $235 billion. Management expects the program to run through fiscal year 2028.
Nvidia Accelerates Its Share Buyback Strategy
The latest authorization marks a major shift in Nvidia’s capital return policy.
Only a few years ago, the company was spending relatively little on share repurchases. In 2020 and 2021, buybacks were minimal compared with current levels.
That changed rapidly as the artificial intelligence boom transformed Nvidia’s revenue, profits and cash generation.
Share repurchases climbed from around $10 billion in fiscal 2023 to nearly $34 billion in fiscal 2025.
Last year, a $50 billion authorization was already considered substantial. The latest $150 billion increase is now the largest buyback expansion in Nvidia’s history.
AI Growth Is Transforming Nvidia’s Balance Sheet
Nvidia has become one of the biggest beneficiaries of the global AI investment cycle.
Strong demand for its graphics processors and accelerated computing platforms has generated enormous cash flows for the company.
That financial strength gives Nvidia more flexibility to invest in new technology while also returning capital to shareholders.
The company’s latest buyback program reflects how dramatically its financial position has changed since the generative AI boom began.
Why the $150 Billion Buyback Matters
Share repurchases can benefit investors by reducing the number of shares available in the market.
With fewer shares outstanding, earnings per share can increase even if total company profits remain unchanged.
However, a buyback of this size also sends a broader signal.
Nvidia’s management appears confident that the company can continue producing enough cash to fund research, expansion and major shareholder returns at the same time.
Jensen Huang Highlights Nvidia’s Long-Term AI Opportunity
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the company’s growth continues to be driven by the shift toward artificial intelligence and accelerated computing.
Huang said Nvidia’s strong cash generation allows the company to continue investing in technologies supporting that transition while also returning money to shareholders.
He added that the expanded authorization reflects management’s confidence in Nvidia’s long-term growth opportunity.
Wall Street Sees a Strong Confidence Signal
Wall Street analysts generally viewed the announcement positively.
Many analysts see the buyback as evidence that Nvidia believes its shares remain attractive despite the company’s enormous increase in market value over recent years.
Mizuho TMT specialist Jordan Klein noted that the authorization may not necessarily lead to a major revaluation of the stock.
However, he said the move suggests Nvidia remains committed to shareholder returns and sees its own shares as an attractive investment at current valuation levels.
Nvidia Continues to Benefit From AI Dominance
Nvidia’s latest buyback highlights the enormous financial impact of the AI boom.
The company has moved from relatively modest share repurchases to one of the largest capital return programs in the corporate market.
As AI infrastructure spending continues to expand, investors will be watching whether Nvidia can maintain its strong cash flow while continuing to invest aggressively in future generations of chips and computing technology.
The $150 billion authorization suggests management remains highly confident in the company’s long-term position within the global AI market.
