Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) reported stronger-than-expected third-quarter earnings, supported by a sharp increase in equity trading revenue and record performance in its Wealth Management division.

The Wall Street banking giant exceeded analysts’ forecasts for both earnings and revenue, highlighting continued strength across several of its core businesses.

Following the announcement, Morgan Stanley shares gained approximately 0.7% in premarket trading as investors reacted to the positive financial results.

Morgan Stanley Earnings Beat Wall Street Expectations

Morgan Stanley reported adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $3.03, exceeding analysts’ consensus estimate of $2.94.

Quarterly revenue reached $20.3 billion, surpassing market expectations of $20.0 billion.

Furthermore, total revenue increased 12% year over year, compared with $18.2 billion during the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

Net income attributable to Morgan Stanley rose to $4.9 billion, up from $4.6 billion a year earlier.

The stronger results reflected robust equity trading activity, continued expansion in wealth management and higher completed merger and acquisition transactions.

Equity Trading Revenue Surges 41% as Institutional Securities Leads Growth

Morgan Stanley’s Institutional Securities division was a major contributor to the bank’s quarterly performance.

Equity trading revenue jumped 41% year over year to $5.8 billion, supported by stronger client activity and particularly favorable business conditions in Asia.

The substantial increase helped offset weaker performance in other trading segments.

Meanwhile, Fixed Income trading revenue declined 7% to $2.0 billion.

The decrease primarily reflected reduced activity and revenue contributions from credit products and commodities.

Despite this weakness, the exceptional growth in equity trading provided significant support for the investment bank’s overall financial performance.

Wealth Management Delivers Record $9.1 Billion Revenue

Morgan Stanley’s Wealth Management division also achieved impressive results, reporting record quarterly revenue of $9.1 billion.

This represented a 10% increase compared with the same period last year.

The division attracted $232 billion in net new assets during the quarter, demonstrating continued demand for the firm’s investment advisory and wealth management services.

Additionally, fee-based asset flows totaled $80 billion, further strengthening the company’s recurring revenue base.

The performance highlights the growing importance of wealth management to Morgan Stanley’s diversified business model.

Its ability to attract substantial client assets continues to complement the more market-sensitive operations of its investment banking and trading divisions.

Investment Banking Revenue Climbs as M&A Activity Improves

Morgan Stanley’s Investment Banking business recorded a modest increase in quarterly revenue.

Revenue rose 2% year over year to $2.2 billion, supported by a higher volume of completed mergers and acquisitions in the Americas.

The improvement suggests that corporate dealmaking activity continued to provide opportunities for the bank’s advisory operations.

However, growth in investment banking remained considerably slower than the expansion recorded in equity trading and wealth management.

Investment Management Revenue Falls 12%

Not all Morgan Stanley business divisions delivered positive results during the quarter.

Investment Management revenue declined 12% year over year to $1.5 billion.

According to the company, the decrease was primarily caused by the reversal of previously accrued carried interest associated with certain investments in one of its private funds.

Carried interest represents performance-related compensation linked to investment returns.

As a result, adjustments to previously recognized carried interest can affect reported revenue within investment management businesses.

Morgan Stanley CEO Highlights Strong Financial Performance

Morgan Stanley Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ted Pick welcomed the quarterly results, emphasizing the firm’s ability to deliver strong profitability through its integrated business model.

The company generated $20.3 billion in net revenue, earnings per share of $3.03 and a return on tangible common equity (ROTCE) of 22.6%.

Pick also highlighted Morgan Stanley’s strategy of combining its different business divisions to provide clients with a broad range of financial services and investment solutions.

The firm’s expense efficiency ratio stood at 67%, reflecting the relationship between operating expenses and revenue.

Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley maintained a Standardized Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio of 14.9%.

This closely watched measure reflects the bank’s regulatory capital strength and its capacity to absorb potential financial losses.

Morgan Stanley Earnings Outlook Remains Supported by Trading and Wealth Management

Morgan Stanley’s third-quarter earnings demonstrated the benefits of its diversified financial services operations.

Strong equity trading activity and record wealth management revenue helped drive the bank’s overall growth, despite weaker results in Fixed Income trading and Investment Management.

The expansion in client assets also reinforced the importance of wealth management as a source of recurring revenue.

Meanwhile, improving merger and acquisition activity provided additional support for the Institutional Securities business.

Looking ahead, investors will likely focus on whether Morgan Stanley can sustain its equity trading momentum, maintain strong asset inflows and capitalize on further improvements in investment banking activity.

Overall, the latest quarterly performance underscores Morgan Stanley’s ability to generate substantial earnings across different market conditions while maintaining a solid regulatory capital position.
