Japan Stocks Fall as Nikkei 225 Drops 0.69% at Close

Japan’s stock market ended Monday’s session lower, with weakness in the Paper & Pulp, Transport and Communication sectors weighing on overall sentiment.

At the closing bell in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 fell 0.69%, ending the session at 65,560.00.

Top Nikkei 225 Performers

Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (TYO:5713) was the strongest performer of the session. The stock jumped 6.64%, or 715 points, to close at 11,475.00.

Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. (TYO:6305) also recorded strong gains, rising 6.40% by 361 points to finish at 6,005.00.

Meanwhile, Komatsu Ltd. (TYO:6301) climbed 4.94%, gaining 349 points to end the session at 7,414.00.

Biggest Decliners in Tokyo

On the downside, Kioxia Holdings Corp. (TYO:285A) was the weakest performer on the Nikkei 225. Its shares dropped 6.24%, or 3,390 points, to close at 50,930.00.

Mercari Inc. (TYO:4385) declined 5.71%, losing 271 points to finish at 4,474.00.

SoftBank Group Corp. (TYO:9984) also came under selling pressure, falling 5.33%, or 280 points, to close at 4,975.00.

Tokyo Stock Exchange Market Breadth

Despite the Nikkei 225 finishing lower, advancing stocks outnumbered declining shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

A total of 2,052 stocks gained, while 1,439 declined and 265 finished unchanged.

The Nikkei Volatility Index, which tracks the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, declined 4.38% to 28.38.

Oil Prices Fall While Gold Rises

Commodity markets were mixed during the session.

Crude oil futures for October delivery fell 2.11%, or $1.84, to trade at $85.22 per barrel.

Meanwhile, Brent crude for November delivery declined 1.83%, or $1.70, to $90.97 per barrel.

Gold moved in the opposite direction. December Gold Futures gained 0.56%, or $26.21, to trade at $4,706.81 per troy ounce.

Japanese Yen and US Dollar Update

In the foreign exchange market, USD/JPY edged 0.03% higher to 159.03, while EUR/JPY gained 0.04% to 185.71.

The US Dollar Index Futures also moved slightly higher, rising 0.08% to 98.81.

Overall, Japanese stocks closed the session under pressure, although broader market breadth remained positive and selected industrial and mining shares posted strong gains.
