Japan’s industrial production unexpectedly declined in August, while retail sales also came in below market expectations.
Factory activity was affected by several factors, including disruptions linked to a late-July earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture.
Japan Industrial Production Drops Sharply
Japanese industrial production fell 2.2% year-on-year in August, according to government data released on Wednesday.
The result was much weaker than the 0.5% increase expected by economists. It also marked a sharp reversal from the 4.0% annual rise recorded in the previous month.
On a monthly basis, industrial production declined 1.7%, compared with forecasts for a 1.4% increase.
Earthquake Disrupts Manufacturing
Industrial output was partly affected by the earthquake that struck the Kyushu region in late July.
Kyushu is an important part of Japan’s economy and accounts for roughly 10% of national GDP. The region is also home to major automobile and semiconductor manufacturing hubs.
As a result, disruptions in the area had a noticeable impact on overall industrial activity.
Supply Chain Problems Add Pressure
Manufacturers also faced broader difficulties related to shipping and raw material supplies.
According to the report, disruptions connected to the US-Iran conflict affected global trade flows and reduced overseas demand for some Japanese manufactured goods.
These pressures added to the weakness already caused by domestic production disruptions.
Japan Retail Sales Miss Forecasts
Separate data showed that Japanese retail sales also grew more slowly than expected in August.
Retail sales increased 2.7% year-on-year, below forecasts for a 3.3% rise.
Growth also slowed from 3.7% in the previous month, pointing to weaker consumer spending momentum.
Inflation and Weak Yen Weigh on Consumers
Persistent inflation and a weaker Japanese yen continued to reduce household purchasing power.
Higher prices made everyday goods more expensive, while broader economic uncertainty also affected consumer confidence.
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East added another source of uncertainty for households and businesses.
Overall, the latest figures suggest that Japan’s economy faced renewed pressure in August, with both industrial production and retail spending losing momentum.
