Bitcoin traded in a narrow range on Wednesday as cryptocurrency markets lacked strong new catalysts. However, the world’s largest cryptocurrency remained on track for an impressive quarterly gain, supported by optimism surrounding US crypto regulation.

Bitcoin stabilized after giving back some gains earlier in the week. Investors continued to monitor elevated US Treasury yields as well as ongoing geopolitical uncertainty involving the United States and Iran.

Bitcoin slipped 0.7% to around $83,384 in early trading.

Bitcoin Heads for 42% Q3 Gain

Bitcoin was on course to gain approximately 42% during the third quarter, covering the three months through September 30.

That would represent its strongest quarterly performance since the fourth quarter of 2024.

A major driver of the rally has been growing optimism over a more favorable regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies in the United States.

Recent moves by the US Securities and Exchange Commission helped improve market sentiment, allowing investors to look beyond disappointment surrounding the Clarity Act.

Concerns over US fiscal conditions also contributed to demand for alternative assets. Rising Treasury yields and broader worries about government finances encouraged some investors to seek exposure to assets such as gold and Bitcoin.

Bitcoin also received support from renewed purchases by Strategy Inc., one of the largest corporate holders of the cryptocurrency.

Treasury Yields Pressure Bitcoin

Despite its strong quarterly performance, Bitcoin came under pressure earlier in September as US bond yields surged.

The cryptocurrency retreated from eight-month highs after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates and delivered a more hawkish outlook for monetary policy.

Treasury yields eased slightly following weaker economic data and more dovish comments on Tuesday. However, yields remained close to multi-year highs.

The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield stayed above 5.2%, close to its highest level in nearly two decades.

Expectations for additional Federal Reserve interest rate increases have been a major factor behind the rise in yields. Markets remain focused on persistent US inflation and the possibility that monetary policy could stay restrictive for longer.

US-Iran Tensions Add to Market Uncertainty

Geopolitical uncertainty also weighed on cryptocurrency prices toward the end of the quarter.

According to the report, tensions between the United States and Iran remained elevated, adding another source of caution for investors.

Uncertainty surrounding any potential diplomatic resolution contributed to a more defensive market environment.

Altcoins Outperform Bitcoin in Q3

While broader cryptocurrency prices declined on Wednesday, several major altcoins were heading for even stronger third-quarter gains than Bitcoin.

Ether fell around 1.5% to $2,665.88, but remained up nearly 70% for the quarter.

XRP declined 0.4% on Wednesday while maintaining a quarterly gain of about 44.2%. BNB was on track to rise approximately 39% during Q3.

Cardano was heading for a gain of nearly 70%, while Chainlink stood out as one of the strongest-performing major altcoins, with an increase approaching 100%.

Growing expectations that more supportive US cryptocurrency regulation could boost decentralized finance adoption helped strengthen sentiment toward Chainlink.

Dogecoin Gains 30% During the Quarter

Among major meme cryptocurrencies, Dogecoin fell around 1.2% on Wednesday.

Despite the daily decline, DOGE remained approximately 30% higher during the third quarter.

However, many cryptocurrencies were still trading lower for the year. Investor interest has increasingly shifted toward artificial intelligence-related opportunities, reducing some of the speculative demand that previously supported the broader crypto market.

Overall, Bitcoin’s 42% quarterly rise highlights the strength of the recent crypto recovery. Still, high Treasury yields, Federal Reserve policy and geopolitical uncertainty could remain important drivers for Bitcoin and the wider cryptocurrency market.
