Iran is introducing new tactics against vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to maintain elevated global oil prices ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November, according to Reuters.

The reported strategy comes as Tehran continues to restrict maritime traffic through one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

Following the joint U.S.-Israeli military offensive against Iran in late February, Iranian authorities tightened their control over the strategic waterway. The resulting disruption has effectively blocked much of the shipping traffic for months.

Before the conflict, approximately 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through the Strait of Hormuz.

Rising Oil Prices Increase Pressure Ahead of U.S. Elections

The prolonged disruption has pushed energy prices higher, adding to inflationary pressures across international markets.

In the United States, motorists are facing increased gasoline costs. Meanwhile, rising diesel prices threaten to make transportation, manufacturing and everyday consumer goods more expensive.

Higher living expenses have also emerged as a major concern among American voters, according to recent polling.

The November 3 midterm elections will determine control of Congress and could significantly affect President Donald Trump’s ability to advance his domestic and economic agenda during the remainder of his second term.

Iran Adopts New Maritime Attack Tactics

According to Reuters, a senior Iranian official confirmed that Tehran has begun modifying its offensive operations against ships accused of violating its restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz.

These tactical adjustments have reportedly resulted in a greater number of attacks on targeted vessels.

The official indicated that Iran intends to undermine efforts by Washington and its allies to reduce international oil prices. Influencing the outcome of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections is reportedly among Tehran’s objectives.

Reuters also reported that the strategic shift received approval from Iran’s senior leadership and is being coordinated across the country’s governing institutions.

Furthermore, an unidentified U.S. military official described changes in Iranian surveillance methods.

One reported tactic involves deploying unarmed observers aboard small boats to locate potential targets, including American naval vessels.

IRGC Reports Cargo Ship Sinking in Strait of Hormuz

The latest developments coincide with another reported maritime incident in the strategically important shipping corridor.

On Wednesday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy announced that a cargo vessel had sunk after reportedly striking a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state television, citing an IRGC statement, said the ship had been traveling along a route that Iranian authorities considered illegal and dangerous.

According to the Associated Press, the vessel was transporting approximately 2,500 containers when it caught fire.

However, independent confirmation of the incident remained limited.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which regularly monitors and reports security incidents affecting commercial shipping in the region, had not issued a corresponding incident report at the time.

The reported escalation highlights the continued risks facing international shipping and global energy supplies as geopolitical tensions remain elevated.
