Bitcoin Drops to $84K as Oil Prices and Bond Yields Rise

Bitcoin fell on Wednesday as higher oil prices and rising U.S. Treasury yields weighed on investor appetite for riskier assets.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency dropped 1.2% to around $84,289 by 02:16 ET. Bitcoin has traded mostly sideways so far in October after posting a strong performance during the third quarter.

Broader crypto prices also moved lower, while optimism over potentially friendlier cryptocurrency regulation in the United States failed to trigger a meaningful recovery.

At the same time, crypto continued to underperform U.S. equities, where strong demand for artificial intelligence stocks helped push Wall Street toward record highs.

Bitcoin Faces Pressure From Higher Oil Prices

A sharp rise in oil prices has become one of the main concerns for Bitcoin and other risk-sensitive assets.

Crude oil climbed as investors reacted to the possibility of further supply disruptions in the Middle East. Severe weather conditions in the Gulf of Mexico also raised concerns about potential interruptions to U.S. oil production.

Higher energy prices can contribute to stronger inflation, which may increase pressure on central banks to keep interest rates elevated or tighten monetary policy further.

That environment is generally considered challenging for speculative assets such as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Treasury Yields Add to Crypto Market Pressure

Bond markets also reflected growing concerns about inflation and interest rates.

Benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yields recently climbed toward their highest levels in 24 years.

Although yields eased slightly this week, they remained close to recent highs. Elevated bond yields can reduce demand for risk assets because investors may find government debt more attractive compared with volatile investments such as crypto.

As a result, Bitcoin has struggled to build momentum despite its strong third-quarter performance.

OKX Raises Capital at $25 Billion Valuation

Meanwhile, crypto exchange OKX announced that it had completed a strategic investment round based on a $25 billion pre-money valuation.

The investment involved several major financial and crypto companies, including Circle, Qube Research, Ripple and Standard Chartered.

OKX did not disclose the total value of the funding round.

However, the exchange said the transaction strengthened its relationship with companies involved in building important parts of the global financial infrastructure.

The latest fundraising follows another investment announced earlier in 2026 involving Intercontinental Exchange.

Altcoins Fall Alongside Bitcoin

The broader cryptocurrency market also moved lower on Wednesday as Bitcoin weakness spread across major altcoins.

The strong crypto rally seen during the third quarter has lost some momentum heading into October.

Historically, October has often been viewed as a positive month for cryptocurrencies, leading traders to use the term “Uptober.” However, several macroeconomic risks could make this year’s performance more difficult.

Crypto markets also struggled during October 2025, showing that seasonal patterns do not always repeat.

Ethereum, Cardano and XRP Move Lower

Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, fell 2.8% to approximately $2,621.66.

XRP declined 1.4%, while Cardano dropped 4.4%.

Solana slipped around 0.7%, while BNB fell 1.3%.

The declines suggest that investors remain cautious across the wider digital asset market rather than focusing only on Bitcoin.

Memecoins Record Sharper Losses

Several major memecoins experienced even steeper declines.

Dogecoin fell around 3.7%, while the TRUMP token dropped approximately 5.7%.

These larger losses highlight how more speculative parts of the crypto market can experience greater volatility when broader risk appetite weakens.

Bitcoin Market Outlook Remains Tied to Macro Conditions

Bitcoin’s short-term direction could remain closely linked to developments in oil prices, inflation expectations, bond yields and central bank policy.

If energy prices remain elevated and Treasury yields continue to rise, investors may remain cautious toward cryptocurrencies.

However, any easing in inflation concerns or bond yields could improve sentiment and help Bitcoin regain momentum.

For now, the Bitcoin price remains under pressure near the $84,000 level as traders assess whether October can still deliver the historically strong performance often associated with the crypto market.
