Report Claims Nvidia AI Servers Were Smuggled to China Through Thailand
A company connected to Thailand’s national artificial intelligence initiative is reportedly under suspicion for helping move billions of dollars worth of Super Micro Computer servers containing advanced Nvidia chips into China, according to a Bloomberg News report published on Friday.
The report cited sources familiar with the matter and stated that Alibaba Group Holding was among the final customers receiving the technology.
US Prosecutors Investigating Server Purchases
According to Bloomberg, U.S. prosecutors revealed in a criminal case earlier this year that company co-founder Liaw allegedly instructed an unnamed Southeast Asian firm to purchase servers equipped with Nvidia AI chips.
Prosecutors claimed that the company acquired approximately $2.5 billion worth of servers during 2024 and 2025.
The servers reportedly contained advanced Nvidia semiconductor technology that is subject to increasing U.S. export restrictions tied to national security concerns.
Thai Company Identified in Bloomberg Report
Bloomberg reported that the unnamed Southeast Asian company referred to by prosecutors as “Company-1” was Bangkok-based OBON Corp.
The company is allegedly linked to Thailand’s broader AI development initiatives.
The report suggested that the servers may have ultimately been routed to Chinese customers despite growing U.S. efforts to restrict exports of advanced AI chips and computing hardware to China.
Reuters Says Report Could Not Be Independently Verified
Reuters stated that it was unable to independently verify the Bloomberg report at the time of publication.
The latest allegations come as the United States continues tightening controls on advanced semiconductor exports amid growing competition with China in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing technologies.
