U.S. President Donald Trump signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran during his state visit to France on Wednesday, according to media reports.

The document establishes an initial framework for ending the conflict and beginning negotiations toward a broader U.S.-Iran agreement.

Trump Confirms Deal Signed at Versailles

Trump confirmed the signing while speaking to reporters as he left the Palace of Versailles on Wednesday evening.

He said the agreement had just been signed at Versailles, according to the BBC.

White House officials told the BBC that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had also signed the document. CBS separately reported that both sides completed the process remotely.

US-Iran Deal Includes Nuclear Commitment

Reports published earlier on Wednesday revealed several important terms included in the memorandum.

Iran reportedly agreed that it would never develop a nuclear weapon. The agreement also calls for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an immediate end to military hostilities.

The ceasefire provisions reportedly extend to fighting in Lebanon.

The United States, meanwhile, would begin lifting sanctions imposed on Tehran as part of the framework.

Agreement Includes $300 Billion Reconstruction Fund

The memorandum also includes a proposed $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran.

However, details about how the fund would operate, who would finance it and how the money would be distributed were not immediately clear.

Further information may emerge during the next stage of negotiations.

Trump Warns Agreement Is Not Permanent

Trump warned earlier on Wednesday that the memorandum did not represent a permanent peace settlement.

He said the United States remained prepared to resume military action if Iran failed to comply with the agreement’s conditions.

Iranian officials issued a similar warning and said Tehran could respond if Washington violated the framework.

Iran also stated that continued Israeli military action against Lebanon could invalidate the peace agreement.

Switzerland Signing Ceremony Remains Uncertain

The United States and Iran had been expected to hold an official signing ceremony in Switzerland on Friday.

However, it remained unclear whether that ceremony would proceed following the reported signing at Versailles.

Trump also met with several NATO allies during the week to explain the terms and objectives of the proposed agreement.

Two Months of Negotiations Expected

The memorandum of understanding is not a final peace agreement.

Instead, it creates a framework for approximately two months of negotiations aimed at reaching a more comprehensive and lasting settlement.

Iran’s nuclear programme is expected to become one of the central issues during those discussions.

Deal Emerges After Months of Conflict

The agreement was announced as the conflict approached its fourth month.

Military tensions between the United States and Iran had intensified in early June. Tehran accused both Washington and Israel of violating an earlier ceasefire.

The newly signed framework could reduce those tensions, but its success will depend on whether both sides comply with the terms during the upcoming negotiation period.
