Trump Says He Will Urge Xi to Open China to Western Businesses

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he plans to ask Chinese President Xi Jinping to further open China’s economy to Western businesses during his upcoming visit to Beijing.

Trump made the comments in a post on social media while traveling aboard Air Force One for a three-day state visit to China.

Trump Highlights Business Delegation

Trump said his first request to Xi would focus on expanding business access and opportunities for American companies operating in China.

He described Xi as “a Leader of extraordinary distinction” and stated that opening China’s markets would allow U.S. business leaders to “work their magic.”

The U.S. delegation includes several major corporate executives, among them Jensen Huang, Elon Musk, and Tim Cook, whom Trump referred to as “Tim Apple.”

Other executives joining the visit represent major companies including Blackstone, BlackRock, Boeing, Cargill, Citigroup, GE Aerospace, Goldman Sachs, Micron Technology, and Qualcomm.

Trade, AI, and Taiwan Expected to Dominate Talks

Trump is expected to discuss several major issues with Xi during the summit, including trade tariffs, artificial intelligence, and Taiwan.

Some analysts believe the meeting could also help ease tensions surrounding the ongoing Iran conflict and potentially break diplomatic deadlock related to ceasefire discussions.

First U.S. Presidential Visit to China in Nearly a Decade

Trump’s visit marks the first official trip to China by a U.S. president in nearly ten years. He previously visited the country during his first presidential term.

The visit comes amid strained relations between the world’s two largest economies following the 2025 trade war and continued disagreements over AI chip restrictions and U.S. arms sales to Taiwan.

The trip was initially scheduled for early April but was postponed until May because of the Iran war.

Trump’s schedule in China includes a formal welcome ceremony, bilateral meetings with Xi, a state banquet, and additional official activities.
