Tencent has reportedly signed a $7 billion agreement with Oracle to lease access to around 100,000 advanced artificial intelligence chips.

The deal is part of Tencent’s broader effort to strengthen its AI capabilities and compete more effectively with other major Chinese technology companies, according to the Financial Times.

Tencent Signs Five-Year Oracle Data Center Deal

The agreement is expected to run for five years and cover multiple Oracle data centers across Southeast Asia.

According to the Financial Times, the arrangement will give Tencent access to advanced AI computing infrastructure that is difficult to obtain directly inside China.

The deal is also reported to be Tencent’s largest overseas leasing agreement to date.

Tencent Gains Access to 100,000 Advanced AI Chips

Through the Oracle partnership, Tencent will reportedly gain access to around 100,000 high-performance AI chips.

These processors are designed for advanced artificial intelligence workloads, including the training and deployment of large AI models.

The agreement is particularly significant because Chinese technology companies face restrictions when attempting to purchase certain advanced AI chips directly.

However, current rules can still allow companies to access some of this computing power through overseas leasing arrangements.

$7 Billion Deal Includes Large Upfront Payment

The total value of the agreement is reported to be around $7 billion.

Tencent is expected to make an upfront payment of approximately 30% of the total value.

The Financial Times also reported that the transaction affected Tencent’s free cash flow during its second-quarter earnings period.

This highlights the scale of investment required as major technology companies increase spending on AI infrastructure.

Tencent Accelerates AI Development

Tencent has been investing heavily in artificial intelligence as competition intensifies across China’s technology industry.

The company is working to improve its own AI models while also integrating artificial intelligence tools into existing products.

One of the key areas of focus is WeChat, Tencent’s flagship messaging and digital services platform.

AI features could allow Tencent to expand automation, content generation and digital assistant capabilities across its ecosystem.

Hunyuan Models Show Improvement

Tencent’s Hunyuan AI models have made noticeable progress in recent months.

The company has been working to reduce the performance gap with rival Chinese AI platforms, including models developed by DeepSeek and Alibaba.

Competition among Chinese AI companies has increased rapidly as businesses invest in more powerful models, cloud infrastructure and AI-enabled applications.

Oracle Deal Highlights Global AI Computing Race

The reported Oracle agreement also reflects the growing global demand for advanced computing capacity.

AI companies require large numbers of powerful processors to train and operate increasingly complex models.

As access to advanced chips becomes more restricted in some markets, international data center leasing agreements are becoming an important alternative.

For Tencent, securing large-scale overseas computing capacity could provide a significant boost to its long-term AI strategy.

AI Spending Continues to Pressure Profitability

Tencent has increased capital spending on artificial intelligence over the past year.

However, the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has also placed pressure on margins and cash flow.

The company now faces the challenge of balancing aggressive AI investment with profitability as competition across China’s technology sector continues to grow.
