SpaceX is reportedly considering launching a Starlink-branded mobile phone service directly to consumers in the United States.
The potential expansion could eventually include a terrestrial wireless network, placing Elon Musk’s company in direct competition with America’s largest telecom operators.
SpaceX Considers Starlink Mobile Service
SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell reportedly discussed the company’s mobile ambitions during its recent initial public offering roadshow.
The Financial Times cited four people familiar with the discussions.
Under the proposed plan, SpaceX could sell mobile phone contracts directly to customers rather than relying entirely on existing telecom providers.
Starlink Could Compete With Major Telecom Companies
A direct-to-consumer Starlink mobile service would compete with established telecom companies such as Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.
The move would represent a major expansion for Starlink, which currently focuses mainly on providing internet connectivity through its satellite network.
Starlink already works with telecom companies, including T-Mobile, to extend mobile coverage into areas where traditional cellular networks are unavailable or unreliable.
However, selling its own mobile contracts would allow SpaceX to build a direct relationship with consumers.
SpaceX Could Reduce Reliance on Telecom Partners
Launching an independent mobile service could help SpaceX reduce its reliance on telecom companies that currently act as intermediaries.
These partners connect Starlink’s satellite technology with customers who already use conventional mobile networks.
By offering contracts directly, SpaceX could gain greater control over pricing, customer service and the overall user experience.
The company could also gain access to the much larger mobile communications market.
Terrestrial Wireless Network May Follow
SpaceX is also reportedly considering building its own ground-based wireless infrastructure.
A terrestrial network could complement Starlink’s satellite constellation and improve mobile coverage in densely populated areas.
Satellite connections are particularly useful in rural and remote locations. However, traditional ground-based networks often provide greater capacity in cities and other areas with heavy data demand.
Combining both technologies could allow SpaceX to offer wider and more reliable mobile coverage.
Spectrum Purchase Fuels Mobile Speculation
Speculation about SpaceX’s telecom ambitions increased after the company acquired wireless spectrum licences from EchoStar for $17 billion last year.
Wireless spectrum is essential for transmitting mobile voice and data signals.
The acquisition suggested that SpaceX may be preparing to expand beyond satellite internet and develop a broader communications network.
SpaceX IPO Raises Expansion Expectations
The report followed SpaceX’s landmark initial public offering, which reportedly valued the company at approximately $1.8 trillion.
The listing could provide SpaceX with additional capital to expand Starlink, acquire infrastructure and enter new telecommunications markets.
However, the proposed mobile service remains under consideration, and SpaceX has not yet confirmed a launch date or detailed rollout plan.
