Shopify shares surged after the e-commerce company delivered better-than-expected second-quarter revenue and earnings.

The company also reported accelerating growth across several important business metrics. Shopify stock climbed approximately 17.5% to $144.90 following the results.

Shopify Revenue Beats Wall Street Estimates

Shopify generated revenue of $3.58 billion during the quarter ending June 30.

The result exceeded the analyst forecast of $3.45 billion. It also represented annual growth of 34% compared with revenue of $2.68 billion in the same quarter last year.

Adjusted earnings reached $0.42 per share, beating the consensus estimate of $0.40.

The combination of stronger revenue and earnings helped drive Shopify shares sharply higher.

Gross Merchandise Volume Climbs 32%

Gross merchandise volume, or GMV, increased by 32% from the previous year to $115.6 billion.

GMV measures the total value of products sold through Shopify’s platform. Strong growth in this figure indicates that merchants are processing more sales through the company’s services.

Shopify said the improvement was broad-based, with solid results across different merchant sizes, sales channels, and geographic markets.

Free Cash Flow Shows Strong Improvement

Shopify’s free cash flow increased to $654 million from $422 million one year earlier.

The company recorded a free cash flow margin of 18%, demonstrating that its revenue growth is translating into stronger cash generation.

Chief Financial Officer Jeff Hoffmeister said Shopify continues to improve its operating leverage. This means the company is increasing earnings and cash flow faster than many of its operating expenses.

Shopify Highlights Growth Across Key Metrics

Shopify President Harley Finkelstein described the period as an exceptionally strong quarter.

Revenue, gross merchandise volume, gross profit, and free cash flow all expanded by more than 30%.

Finkelstein also highlighted artificial intelligence as an important growth opportunity. Shopify is using AI to help merchants improve their operations, reach customers, and create new shopping experiences.

Merchant Solutions Revenue Jumps 37%

Merchant Solutions remained Shopify’s largest source of revenue.

Revenue from the division climbed 37% year over year to $2.78 billion. The segment includes payment processing, transaction fees, shipping services, and other tools used by merchants.

Subscription Solutions revenue increased by 22% to $802 million.

This division includes the recurring fees businesses pay to use Shopify’s platform and subscription plans.

Operating Income Rises 68%

Shopify reported operating income of $488 million, representing an increase of 68% from $291 million in the same period last year.

The sharp improvement suggests that Shopify is managing expenses effectively while continuing to invest in growth.

Higher operating income also strengthens the company’s ability to fund product development, artificial intelligence tools, and international expansion.

Shopify Issues Strong Third-Quarter Guidance

For the third quarter of 2026, Shopify expects revenue to grow at a percentage rate in the low thirties from the previous year.

The company forecasts gross profit growth in the mid-to-high twenties percentage range.

The midpoint of that projection is approximately 27.5%. This would be slightly below the 31% gross profit growth recorded during the second quarter.

Shopify also expects its free cash flow margin to remain between the high teens and low twenties.

Analysts Welcome Shopify’s Outlook

Jefferies analysts described Shopify’s growth outlook as robust.

The firm highlighted the company’s forecast for revenue growth in the low thirties and gross profit growth in the mid-to-high twenties.

Analysts were particularly encouraged by Shopify’s free cash flow performance. Second-quarter cash generation exceeded expectations, while the third-quarter margin forecast was also stronger than anticipated.

Jefferies said the results addressed several important concerns previously raised by investors.

Why Shopify Stock Is Rising

Shopify’s share-price rally reflects strength across nearly every major financial measure.

Revenue and earnings exceeded forecasts, while GMV, operating income, and free cash flow all recorded strong growth.

The company also provided guidance that indicates its momentum could continue into the next quarter.

Although gross profit growth may moderate slightly, investors appear confident that Shopify can continue expanding while maintaining healthy cash flow and improving profitability.
