Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Monday that the company has entered into an agentic AI partnership with ecommerce giant Shopify.

The agreement is designed to make online shopping and checkout easier through Muse, Meta’s recently launched personal AI agent.

Meta and Shopify Bring Checkout to Muse

Zuckerberg announced the partnership in a post on X, saying the collaboration will simplify shopping and checkout inside Muse.

Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke had revealed the agreement earlier in the day.

According to Lutke, the partnership will allow users to complete agentic checkout through Shop Pay across Shopify stores.

The integration could make it easier for shoppers to move from product discovery to payment without leaving the AI-powered experience.

Shopify Shares Jump After AI Partnership

Shopify shares surged around 7% on Monday following news of the partnership.

The market reaction highlighted growing investor interest in the role of artificial intelligence in ecommerce.

AI-powered shopping assistants are increasingly being positioned as a new way for consumers to discover products, compare options and complete purchases.

Meta’s Muse Gains Popularity

Meta launched Muse earlier in September as a mobile application.

The personal AI agent has gained significant popularity in recent weeks and climbed rapidly through Apple’s App Store rankings.

Muse reportedly moved ahead of several major apps and services, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Kalshi and Polymarket.

The Shopify partnership could further expand Muse’s capabilities by adding direct ecommerce and payment functionality.

Amazon Takes a Different Approach to Meta’s AI Agent

Meta’s agreement with Shopify stands in contrast to Amazon’s approach.

Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse AI agent from accessing its retail website, limiting the assistant’s ability to interact with Amazon’s shopping platform.

The difference highlights how major ecommerce companies are taking different approaches to AI agents and automated shopping.

While Shopify is opening its ecosystem to Meta’s AI technology, Amazon appears to be taking a more restrictive approach.

The Meta-Shopify partnership therefore represents another important step in the growing competition to integrate artificial intelligence directly into the online shopping experience.
