Japanese stocks finished Monday’s session higher, supported by gains across the real estate, banking and textile sectors.
At the closing bell in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 advanced 0.70%, reaching its highest level in around one month as buying momentum improved across several major sectors.
Kioxia Leads Nikkei 225 Gainers
Kioxia Holdings Corp was the strongest performer in the Nikkei 225 during the session. The stock surged 15.07%, gaining 8,100 points to close at 61,840.
Mitsui Mining and Smelting Co. also posted a strong performance, climbing 7.54% to finish at 31,590.
Meanwhile, Fujikura Ltd. gained 7.29%, ending the trading day at 6,078.
These sharp advances helped support the broader Japanese stock market and contributed to the Nikkei 225’s move to a fresh one-month high.
Trend Micro and NEC Among Biggest Decliners
Despite the overall positive session, several major Japanese stocks recorded significant losses.
Trend Micro Inc. was among the weakest performers, falling 8.53% to close at 5,352.
NEC Corp. declined 7.39%, finishing the session at 4,786, while Dentsu Inc. dropped 7.09% to 3,510.
Market breadth remained slightly positive overall. On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, 1,816 stocks advanced, compared with 1,717 declining shares, while 227 stocks finished unchanged.
Nikkei Volatility Index Moves Lower
Investor expectations for market volatility eased during the session.
The Nikkei Volatility Index, which tracks expected volatility based on Nikkei 225 options, declined 2.18% to 30.96.
A lower volatility reading generally indicates reduced expectations for sharp market swings, although volatility levels remain an important factor for investors monitoring Japanese equities.
Oil Prices Slip While Gold Advances
Commodity markets were mixed during Monday’s trading.
Crude oil futures for October delivery declined 0.49%, falling $0.40 to approximately $81.07 per barrel.
Brent crude for October delivery also edged lower, dropping 0.11% to $88.42 per barrel.
Gold moved in the opposite direction. December gold futures rose 0.49%, gaining $21.79 to trade near $4,459.09 per troy ounce.
The moves reflected a mixed trading environment across global commodity markets as investors continued assessing economic and market developments.
Japanese Yen Strengthens Against US Dollar
Currency markets also saw modest movement.
The USD/JPY exchange rate declined 0.22% to 158.97, indicating some strengthening in the Japanese yen against the US dollar.
Meanwhile, EUR/JPY slipped 0.02% to 184.34.
The US Dollar Index Futures, which measures the dollar against a basket of major currencies, fell 0.24% to 99.33.
Nikkei 225 Reaches One-Month High
The Nikkei 225’s 0.70% advance marked another positive session for Japanese equities, with strength in financials, real estate and selected technology-related companies helping drive the index higher.
While major gainers such as Kioxia delivered double-digit returns, weakness in companies including Trend Micro, NEC and Dentsu showed that performance remained mixed beneath the headline index move.
Investors will continue watching currency movements, commodity prices and volatility levels for additional signals about the direction of the Japanese stock market.
