Iranian authorities have described the US midterm election results as a clear rejection of President Donald Trump’s war against Iran. However, despite welcoming the political setback for Trump, Tehran remains concerned about the possibility of further American military strikes.
Iran Sees US Election Results as a Message Against War
Iran’s parliament speaker and chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, welcomed the election outcome. In a social media statement, he argued that American voters had expressed their opposition to the conflict, driven by moral concerns and rising living costs.
Ghalibaf also urged Washington to respect public sentiment and avoid launching additional attacks against Iran.
Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei expressed a more cautious outlook. He warned that American hostility toward Iran would likely persist regardless of political developments in Washington.
Khamenei also rejected the idea of yielding to US pressure, suggesting that Washington’s long-standing global dominance was approaching its end.
Democrats Take Control of Congress as War Costs Mount
The Democratic Party secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate following Tuesday’s US midterm elections, ending Republican majorities in Congress.
Economic concerns played a significant role in the election results. Many American voters expressed frustration over rising living expenses, particularly higher gasoline and diesel prices linked to the ongoing Iran war.
The conflict has disrupted energy supplies from the Middle East, contributing to increased oil prices and adding pressure to households and businesses worldwide.
Tehran Fears Another US Military Offensive
Despite celebrating the Democrats’ electoral victory, Iranian officials remain worried about Trump’s next move.
According to Reuters, two senior Iranian officials expressed concerns that the US president could respond to his party’s political defeat by ordering additional military strikes against Iran.
Diplomatic efforts to prevent another escalation have reportedly intensified. Nevertheless, uncertainty persists as Washington considers its military options and Tehran prepares potential retaliatory measures.
Trump Defends Iran War Despite Republican Election Defeat
President Trump acknowledged that the Middle East conflict contributed to the Republican Party’s disappointing election performance.
During interviews with Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, Trump admitted that the Iran war had played a role in the outcome.
However, he continued to defend his decision to participate in the US-Israeli military campaign launched against Iran in late February.
Despite the conflict’s economic consequences and its impact on global energy markets, Trump maintained that his decision was justified and indicated he would make the same choice again.
