Gold prices moved slightly higher on Wednesday as investors avoided taking major positions before the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision.
Renewed tensions between the United States and Iran also pushed oil prices higher. As a result, concerns about inflation returned to financial markets.
Spot gold rose 0.4% to $4,043.38 per ounce by 03:00 ET, while U.S. gold futures were almost unchanged at $4,040.10.
The precious metal had fallen by more than 1% during the previous session as a stronger U.S. dollar reduced demand.
Gold Investors Await the Fed Decision
The U.S. Dollar Index slipped by 0.1% on Wednesday. However, it remained close to a one-month high.
A stronger dollar usually makes gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies, which can limit demand for the metal.
The Federal Reserve is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged at the end of its two-day policy meeting.
Therefore, investors will focus closely on comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh for clues about the timing of possible future interest rate cuts.
Higher Interest Rates Could Pressure Gold
Gold does not provide interest or dividend payments. Consequently, higher interest rates can make interest-bearing assets more attractive than the precious metal.
Expectations that borrowing costs could remain elevated for longer may therefore limit gold’s upside.
However, any indication that the Federal Reserve is preparing to ease monetary policy could support demand for gold.
Lower interest rates often benefit the metal by reducing the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets.
U.S.-Iran Tensions Return to Focus
Geopolitical risks also influenced the gold market after Iran launched ballistic missiles at U.S. forces in the Middle East.
According to U.S. Central Command, all of the missiles were intercepted.
Meanwhile, Iraq’s Iran-aligned Popular Mobilization Forces claimed that U.S. and Saudi forces carried out airstrikes against its headquarters in several Iraqi provinces.
Saudi Arabia also said it intercepted drones launched from Iraqi territory toward oil facilities. The country blamed Iran-backed militias for the attempted attacks.
Oil Prices Rebound More Than 4%
The latest hostilities ended a four-day pause in direct military exchanges between Washington and Tehran.
The renewed escalation weakened hopes that recent diplomatic efforts could lead to a longer period of calm.
Oil prices climbed by more than 4% following the latest developments, raising concerns about possible disruptions to energy supplies.
Higher oil prices can increase transportation and production costs. Therefore, a sustained oil rally could place additional pressure on inflation.
Inflation Concerns Create Mixed Signals for Gold
Rising geopolitical risks often support gold because investors view the metal as a safe-haven asset.
However, higher oil prices may also complicate the outlook for monetary policy by keeping inflation elevated.
ING analysts said renewed tensions in the Middle East and higher oil prices could weigh on gold by reviving inflation concerns.
Persistent inflation could encourage the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates high for longer, which would normally be negative for gold.
U.S. Inflation and Employment Data Ahead
Investors are also preparing for several important U.S. economic reports later this week.
The personal consumption expenditures price index will provide fresh information about inflation. The indicator is closely monitored by the Federal Reserve when setting monetary policy.
Markets will also assess the July payrolls report for signs of strength or weakness in the U.S. labor market.
Stronger-than-expected employment or inflation figures could reduce expectations for rate cuts. In contrast, weaker data may increase hopes for a more supportive Fed policy.
Silver Rises While Platinum Remains Stable
Other precious metals recorded mixed movements.
Silver prices gained 1.7% to trade near $58.11 per ounce. Platinum remained broadly unchanged at approximately $1,605.02 per ounce.
Copper prices were also mixed. Benchmark London Metal Exchange copper futures fell 0.2% to $13,663.33 per metric ton, while U.S. copper futures increased slightly to $6.339 per pound.
Fed Guidance Could Determine Gold’s Next Move
Gold remained supported by geopolitical uncertainty and safe-haven demand. However, the rebound in oil prices added new concerns about inflation and interest rates.
The Federal Reserve’s policy statement and guidance will likely determine the metal’s next major move.
A hawkish message could strengthen the dollar and pressure gold prices. However, a dovish outlook or signs of future rate cuts could help the precious metal extend its recovery.
