German retail sales declined sharply in September 2026, highlighting renewed weakness in consumer spending across Europe’s largest economy.

According to official data released on Monday, retail sales dropped 2% month over month in real terms, significantly missing market expectations for a 0.4% increase. The disappointing figures also reversed August’s revised 1.2% gain.

After adjusting for seasonal and calendar effects, retail sales decreased 1.5% in nominal terms, indicating a broader slowdown in retail activity.

German Retail Sales Weaken as Petrol Station Revenue Diverges

Petrol stations recorded a particularly sharp decline in inflation-adjusted sales during September.

Real sales at petrol stations fell 3.4% compared with August, while nominal sales increased 2.1% over the same period.

The difference was even more pronounced on an annual basis. Compared with September 2025, petrol station sales declined 9.3% in real terms but surged 16.2% in nominal terms.

This substantial gap between real and nominal figures highlights the importance of distinguishing changes in sales volumes from changes in monetary revenue.

Food and Non-Food Retailers Report Falling Sales

Germany’s food retail sector also experienced weaker demand in September.

Food sales declined 1.4% in real terms and 1.1% in nominal terms compared with the previous month.

On a year-over-year basis, food retailers recorded a 1.1% decrease in inflation-adjusted sales, while nominal revenue fell 0.5%.

Meanwhile, the non-food retail sector registered an even steeper monthly contraction.

Non-food sales dropped 2.4% in real terms and 1.9% in nominal terms compared with August.

Compared with September 2025, inflation-adjusted non-food sales decreased 2.8%. However, nominal sales increased 1.7%, reflecting a divergence between real retail performance and reported revenue.

German Online Retail Sales Decline Despite Annual Growth

Online shopping and mail-order businesses were not immune to September’s broader retail downturn.

Sales in this segment fell 2.2% in real terms and 2.0% in nominal terms compared with August.

Nevertheless, the sector maintained positive growth on an annual basis.

Compared with September 2025, online and mail-order retail sales increased 4.4% in real terms and 5.7% in nominal terms.

These figures suggest that although online retailers experienced weaker monthly performance, the sector continued to expand compared with the previous year.

Germany Introduces Updated Retail Sales Methodology

Germany’s Federal Statistical Office also announced an important methodological change affecting its retail sales statistics.

Starting with September 2026, the statistical agency replaced its previous sample of reporting businesses with a newly selected group.

The revised methodology was also applied retroactively to January 2026, ensuring that the figures published for the year follow the updated statistical framework.

This adjustment is important when comparing newly published retail figures with earlier estimates, as changes in methodology can influence historical data.

Weak September Sales Highlight Consumer Spending Concerns

September’s unexpectedly steep decline points to renewed challenges for Germany’s retail sector.

The weakness extended across several categories, including food, non-food products, petrol stations, and online retail.

Although some segments continued to report higher nominal revenue or annual growth, the widespread monthly declines in real sales indicate softer retail activity.

With German retail sales falling well below economists’ expectations, upcoming consumer spending figures will be closely watched for signs of whether September’s downturn represents a temporary setback or the beginning of a more sustained slowdown.
