Looking for the latest crypto news today? Here are the biggest developments affecting Bitcoin, Ethereum, blockchain regulation, DeFi and the wider digital asset market.
Today’s major stories include fresh guidance from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Bitget’s phased return of Bitcoin withdrawals following a major security breach, and Vitalik Buterin’s vision for Ethereum after the upcoming Hegotá upgrade.
SEC Provides New Guidance on Crypto Securities Rules
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has provided additional guidance on when certain crypto assets and activities may fall outside federal securities laws.
The SEC staff published new frequently asked questions covering areas including token buybacks, decentralized networks and staking receipt tokens.
The guidance expands on the agency’s previous interpretation of how securities law applies to digital assets.
For example, the SEC staff said a token buyback may not represent the type of managerial effort associated with an investment contract when the underlying crypto network is already functional.
Similarly, work designed to maintain or improve an existing functional network may not necessarily satisfy that standard.
The agency also addressed staking receipt tokens. Under certain circumstances, these tokens may be classified as digital tools or digital commodities rather than securities.
SEC Guidance Does Not Create New Law
Importantly, the latest FAQs represent the views of SEC staff and are not legally binding.
The SEC states that the guidance does not create new obligations, change existing law or constitute a formal rule approved by the Commission.
Nevertheless, the update provides crypto companies with additional insight into how regulators may apply existing securities rules to digital assets.
The clarification arrives as U.S. lawmakers continue debating broader cryptocurrency regulation.
CLARITY Act Remains Stalled in the Senate
The regulatory update follows the Senate’s failure to advance the CLARITY Act earlier in September.
The legislation was designed to establish a more comprehensive regulatory structure for digital assets and define responsibilities between agencies including the SEC and Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
The bill received a 50-49 majority but failed to reach the 60-vote threshold required to advance. As a result, regulators continue operating primarily under their existing legal authority while the legislation remains stalled.
Bitget Restarts Bitcoin Withdrawals After Major Hack
Crypto exchange Bitget has begun restoring withdrawals following a security breach that affected approximately $387.5 million in crypto assets.
The incident occurred on September 24 and involved unauthorized transfers from part of Bitget’s hot and warm wallet infrastructure.
According to the exchange, its cold wallets were not affected.
Bitget initially estimated losses at roughly $351.6 million. However, the figure was later increased to approximately $387.5 million after additional Zcash and Tron transactions were included in the investigation.
Bitcoin Withdrawals Return First
Bitget began restoring Bitcoin withdrawals on Monday, starting with the Bitcoin network.
The exchange said withdrawal services are returning gradually because every supported blockchain must undergo additional security checks before reopening.
Ether and USDT withdrawals are scheduled to follow, with other tokens and services being restored in stages.
Bitget has also said that its Protection Fund will cover the financial impact of the security incident on users.
Meanwhile, investigators continue tracing assets connected to the attack.
Vitalik Buterin Outlines Ethereum’s Next Era
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has also offered new insight into the future of the Ethereum network.
Buterin said the planned Hegotá upgrade could become Ethereum’s final “normal” fork before the blockchain enters a significantly more advanced stage of development.
Hegotá is currently planned for 2027.
According to Buterin, the upgrade could be the final major fork whose architecture would still look relatively familiar to someone who understood Ethereum during its early years.
Ethereum Moves Beyond a Traditional Blockchain
Ethereum’s longer-term roadmap includes technologies such as recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus mechanisms and quantum-resistant cryptography.
Buterin also highlighted PeerDAS as an important step in Ethereum’s evolution.
PeerDAS allows network nodes to verify that data is available by sampling portions of it instead of downloading the entire dataset.
According to Buterin, technologies such as these are gradually transforming Ethereum from a conventional blockchain into a much more advanced cryptographic computing platform.
Ethereum Could Become a Cryptographic World Computer
Buterin described Ethereum’s future as moving toward what could effectively become a “cryptographic world computer.”
Under this model, more computation could take place away from Ethereum’s main blockchain.
The base layer would instead focus heavily on verifying results, settling transactions and maintaining access to shared onchain data.
Such an architecture could allow Ethereum applications to scale while continuing to benefit from the security and decentralization of the underlying network.
Crypto Market Watches Regulation, Security and Ethereum Development
Today’s crypto news highlights three major themes currently shaping the digital asset industry.
U.S. regulators are continuing to clarify how existing securities laws apply to cryptocurrencies. At the same time, exchange security remains in focus following Bitget’s major breach.
Ethereum, meanwhile, is preparing for a technological transition that could significantly change how the network operates over the coming years.
Together, these developments could have important implications for Bitcoin, Ethereum, DeFi, Web3 and the broader cryptocurrency market.
