China’s exports surged 36.3% year-on-year in September, significantly exceeding market expectations. Meanwhile, imports jumped 31%, according to customs data released on Wednesday.
The strong export performance came as a surprise to economists. A Reuters poll had projected annual export growth of 25.5%, following a 25% increase in August.
Imports also exceeded forecasts by a considerable margin. Economists had expected import growth to slow to 24.5% in September, compared with the 28.2% increase recorded in the previous month.
