Bitcoin Mining Stocks Plunge Up to 13% as Wall Street Suffers Worst Selloff Since July

Bitcoin mining stocks suffered heavy losses on Wednesday as a sharp Wall Street selloff triggered widespread declines across technology and artificial intelligence infrastructure companies.

Major Bitcoin miners, including TeraWulf, Core Scientific, Cipher Mining and IREN, each lost more than 12% as stronger-than-expected US inflation figures raised concerns about future interest rates and borrowing costs.

The downturn affected the broader US stock market, with technology and AI-related companies experiencing some of the steepest declines.

Wall Street Records Sharpest Selloff Since July

US equities experienced their worst trading session since July as investors reacted to the latest inflation figures and reassessed expectations for Federal Reserve monetary policy.

The S&P 500 declined 1.1%, marking its largest single-day loss since July 29.

Meanwhile, the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.9%, recording its steepest daily decline since July 23.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average showed greater resilience, falling just 0.1% during the session.

Selling pressure was particularly intense among companies involved in artificial intelligence infrastructure and data center development.

CoreWeave, a major data center operator, plunged 16%, while AI infrastructure provider Nebius lost 11%.

Oracle also suffered substantial losses, with its shares declining 9%.

According to PRISM’s AI Data Center and Infrastructure Index, 21 of the 23 tracked AI infrastructure stocks finished Wednesday’s session lower.

The average decline across these companies reached 7.46%, highlighting the severity of the sector-wide selloff.

Bitcoin Mining Stocks Plunge as AI Infrastructure Shares Collapse

The downturn extended into the cryptocurrency mining industry, where several major companies have increasingly diversified into artificial intelligence infrastructure.

TeraWulf shares dropped 12.64%, making the company one of the hardest-hit Bitcoin miners during Wednesday’s session.

Core Scientific followed closely with a 12.44% decline, while Cipher Mining fell 12.35%.

IREN also experienced significant selling pressure, losing 12.2% of its market value during the day.

Other publicly traded Bitcoin mining companies, including Riot Platforms, Bitdeer Technologies, MARA and CleanSpark, recorded losses as well.

The widespread declines demonstrate how Bitcoin mining stocks have become increasingly exposed to broader technology sector trends.

As mining companies expand into AI computing and data center operations, their valuations can become more sensitive to changes in interest rates, infrastructure investment and investor expectations.

Higher Interest Rates Threaten AI Infrastructure Expansion

One of the main concerns affecting technology and Bitcoin mining stocks is the possibility of additional Federal Reserve interest rate increases.

Many artificial intelligence infrastructure companies depend on substantial capital investment to develop data centers, purchase computing equipment and expand their operations.

These projects frequently require significant external financing, including debt.

Consequently, higher interest rates could increase borrowing expenses and reduce the profitability of future infrastructure investments.

Companies pursuing aggressive expansion strategies may face additional financial pressure if financing conditions become less favorable.

This concern has become increasingly relevant for Bitcoin miners seeking to diversify their businesses through AI hosting and high-performance computing services.

Hot US Inflation Report Triggers Market-Wide Selling

The latest US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report revealed that annual inflation accelerated to 3.7% in September.

The figure exceeded economists’ forecasts of 3.6% and remained significantly above the Federal Reserve’s 2% inflation target.

Rising gasoline prices, linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, contributed to the stronger inflation reading.

The unexpected increase intensified concerns that the Federal Reserve might need to maintain restrictive monetary policy or introduce additional interest rate hikes.

Following the report, financial markets briefly assigned a probability exceeding 50% to an October interest rate increase.

However, those expectations subsequently eased as investors considered comments from Federal Reserve policymakers.

Federal Reserve Signals Caution Over October Rate Hike

San Francisco Federal Reserve President Mary Daly suggested that further monetary tightening could be necessary to bring inflation under control.

Nevertheless, she indicated that policymakers did not need to rush into another interest rate increase at their October meeting.

Speaking to Reuters, Daly emphasized the importance of gathering sufficient economic information before making another policy decision.

Her remarks suggested that the central bank could afford to evaluate additional inflation and economic indicators rather than act immediately.

The comments helped temper expectations of an imminent rate increase, although uncertainty surrounding future monetary policy remained elevated.

Bitcoin Mining Stocks Face Continued Market Uncertainty

The latest Wall Street selloff highlights the growing connection between cryptocurrency mining companies and the artificial intelligence infrastructure industry.

While diversification into AI computing offers Bitcoin miners potential new revenue opportunities, it also exposes them to additional financial risks.

Higher borrowing costs, persistent inflation and changing investor sentiment could create challenges for companies pursuing large-scale data center expansion.

At the same time, expectations surrounding Federal Reserve interest rates remain a major influence on both cryptocurrency markets and technology stocks.

Looking ahead, investors will closely monitor inflation developments, monetary policy signals and the performance of AI infrastructure companies.

These factors could play an important role in determining whether Bitcoin mining stocks recover from Wednesday’s sharp losses or face additional selling pressure.
