Bitcoin fell below the $80,000 mark on Thursday as stronger-than-expected US producer inflation data triggered fresh volatility across cryptocurrency markets. The latest inflation figures raised concerns about the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook, putting additional pressure on risk-sensitive assets.
The Bitcoin price briefly dropped to its lowest level since September 18, losing as much as 1.8% during the session. However, buyers subsequently returned, helping BTC recover toward $81,000.
Market analysts are now monitoring important technical support levels, with a potential decline toward $78,000 remaining a significant possibility.
US PPI Inflation Surges to Its Highest Annual Rate Since 2022
The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) report revealed a sharper-than-anticipated increase in US wholesale inflation.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), producer prices climbed 6.3% year over year in September, significantly exceeding market expectations of 5.3%.
Meanwhile, core producer inflation reached 5%, compared with forecasts of approximately 4.4%.
On a monthly basis, headline PPI jumped 1.3%, marking its largest increase since March 2022. The annual inflation rate also reached its highest level since December 2022.
These figures reinforced concerns that inflationary pressures remain persistent despite the Federal Reserve’s restrictive monetary policy.
The report followed another disappointing inflation release, as the previous day’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) data also exceeded expectations.
Together, the stronger inflation readings increased uncertainty surrounding future US interest rate decisions and weighed on investor sentiment.
Bitcoin Faces Pressure as Global Stock Markets Decline
The Bitcoin selloff occurred alongside a broader retreat from riskier investments.
Technology stocks experienced significant selling pressure, particularly in Asian markets. South Korea’s KOSPI index declined approximately 7.5% on Thursday as investors reduced exposure to major technology companies.
The weakness reflected growing uncertainty surrounding elevated technology stock valuations and the financial sustainability of massive artificial intelligence investments.
Bitcoin also struggled as investors reassessed their exposure to speculative assets amid tightening financial conditions.
Economist Mohamed El-Erian highlighted the unusually strong PPI reading, suggesting that the latest producer inflation figures were particularly concerning compared with the previous consumer inflation report.
However, the reaction in US government bond markets presented an interesting contrast.
US Treasury Yields Fall Despite Strong Inflation Data
Although inflation exceeded expectations, US Treasury yields declined rather than rising.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell toward its lowest level since September 23, suggesting that demand for government bonds was outweighing concerns about persistent inflation.
Typically, stronger inflation increases expectations of tighter monetary policy, which can push bond yields higher.
However, investors appeared increasingly focused on broader financial risks and the economic outlook.
Robin Brooks, a former chief foreign exchange strategist at Goldman Sachs, has previously argued that the relationship between economic data surprises and Treasury yields has weakened considerably.
His analysis showed that the 30-day correlation between stronger-than-expected economic data and movements in 10-year Treasury yields declined from approximately 0.6 earlier in 2026 to slightly below zero by late August.
Brooks suggested that growing concerns about the US federal budget deficit could help explain this changing relationship.
As a result, government borrowing requirements and fiscal uncertainty may increasingly influence long-term bond yields, even when economic indicators point in another direction.
Bitcoin Price Analysis: Key Support Levels Near $78,000
Despite the latest decline, several technical indicators suggest that Bitcoin could maintain its broader bullish market structure.
Traders are closely monitoring two important exponential moving averages (EMAs) on the weekly chart.
The 21-week EMA currently stands near $76,144, while the 50-week EMA is positioned around $78,459.
These moving averages could provide important support if Bitcoin experiences another wave of selling pressure.
Crypto analyst Rekt Capital suggested that a volatile retest of these indicators would not necessarily invalidate Bitcoin’s longer-term bullish outlook.
Historically, Bitcoin has occasionally moved temporarily below major moving averages during the early stages of bull markets before establishing a bottom.
However, the analyst also noted an important difference in the current market structure.
Previous examples generally occurred after a bullish crossover between the two moving averages. Bitcoin has not yet completed that crossover, leaving the present technical setup less established.
Consequently, the area around $78,000 could become a crucial test for buyers attempting to preserve the broader uptrend.
Bitcoin Must Reclaim $82,800 to Strengthen Its Recovery
Beyond the immediate support levels, Bitcoin continues to face resistance between $82,500 and $82,800.
This region previously served as an important technical reference point. However, BTC has struggled to recover convincingly above it.
Technical analyst Aksel Kibar also questioned the strength of Bitcoin’s recent weekly close near $83,700, suggesting that the move lacked sufficient confirmation of a sustained breakout.
According to his analysis, a return inside the previous trading range could extend the consolidation phase between approximately $60,000 and $82,800.
Meanwhile, the $75,000 region remains another important technical threshold. A sustained decline below that level could weaken the bullish reversal scenario.
For now, Bitcoin needs to reclaim the $82,500–$82,800 resistance zone to strengthen the case for renewed upside momentum.
What’s Next for Bitcoin After the Inflation Surprise?
Bitcoin’s near-term outlook remains closely linked to US inflation developments, Federal Reserve expectations and broader investor risk appetite.
The unexpectedly strong PPI report has introduced additional uncertainty, particularly as policymakers continue assessing whether inflation is sufficiently under control.
From a technical perspective, the $80,000 psychological level remains an immediate area of interest.
A sustained recovery above that threshold could encourage buyers to challenge resistance around $82,800.
Conversely, continued weakness could expose Bitcoin to another test of the $78,000 region, followed by the longer-term moving average near $76,000.
Ultimately, the cryptocurrency’s ability to defend these support levels may help determine whether the latest decline represents a temporary correction or the beginning of a more prolonged consolidation phase.
