Bitcoin moved higher on Monday, holding above $77,000 as optimism over U.S. crypto regulation and expectations for easier financial conditions supported the market.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency rose 1.3% to $77,091.10 by 01:47 ET (05:47 GMT).
Broader cryptocurrency prices also traded higher, although many tokens pulled back from their recent weekend peaks. At the same time, investors remained cautious ahead of expected new U.S. sanctions against Iran.
Bitcoin Rebounds Toward $80,000
Bitcoin recently climbed above $79,000 after U.S. President Donald Trump urged lawmakers to approve what he described as a fair version of the CLARITY Act.
The legislation is designed to create a clearer regulatory framework for the U.S. cryptocurrency industry.
Crypto companies and investors have closely followed the bill because it could provide greater clarity over how digital assets are regulated in the United States.
However, the legislation has remained stalled in Congress for more than a year.
CLARITY Act Faces Political Disagreements
Progress on the CLARITY Act has slowed because lawmakers remain divided over several important provisions.
One key issue involves how cryptocurrencies should be classified. Policymakers have debated whether certain digital assets should be treated as securities or commodities.
Another disagreement involves the treatment of yield payments linked to stablecoins.
Lawmakers have also debated proposed restrictions that could limit members of Congress and government officials from trading cryptocurrencies.
These discussions have gained additional attention amid controversy surrounding Trump’s financial exposure to the crypto sector.
Despite renewed calls for lawmakers to approve the legislation, it remains unclear when the CLARITY Act could become law.
Treasury Bond Buybacks Support Crypto Sentiment
Crypto markets received additional support after the U.S. Treasury signaled last week that it plans to increase purchases of longer-term government bonds.
The Treasury intends to double its buybacks of longer-dated securities, a move aimed partly at easing pressure on long-term yields.
Lower bond yields and increased market liquidity can improve investor appetite for higher-risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.
Gold also benefited from expectations of easier financial conditions.
Bitcoin Benefits From the ‘Debasement Trade’
The latest market move has also renewed interest in what investors often call the debasement trade.
The concept reflects concerns that rising U.S. government deficits and increased liquidity could weaken the dollar over time.
In that environment, investors may seek alternative stores of value such as Bitcoin and gold.
Bitcoin has frequently been described as a potential digital store of value. However, its relatively high volatility continues to make it more speculative than traditional safe-haven assets such as gold.
Ether, XRP and Altcoins Move Higher
The broader crypto market also posted gains on Monday.
Ether rose 2.7% to $2,457.34, while XRP gained 2.4% to $1.4784.
Solana, Cardano and BNB each advanced by more than 2%.
Memecoins also moved higher. Dogecoin gained 2.4%, while the TRUMP token rose around 0.5%.
Crypto Market Outlook Remains Positive
Bitcoin’s ability to remain above $77,000 suggests that sentiment has improved following the recent rebound.
Investors are now watching developments around the CLARITY Act, Treasury bond purchases and broader U.S. financial conditions for clues about the next major move in cryptocurrency prices.
Geopolitical developments involving Iran could also influence risk appetite across global markets in the near term.
