Zcash and Monero Prices Fall as Privacy Coins Face China Scrutiny

Privacy coins are facing renewed pressure after Chinese legal researchers identified anonymous cryptocurrencies and crypto mixers as possible warning signs of money laundering.

The development affected investor sentiment across the sector. Zcash and Monero prices both declined, while the total value of the privacy coin market also moved lower.

Chinese Researchers Raise Concerns About Privacy Coins

The latest concerns came from a research article published on the website of China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate.

The paper argued that digital assets have created new challenges for law enforcement agencies. Cryptocurrencies can make transactions faster and more efficient. However, their decentralized, anonymous and international structure may also help criminals transfer illegal funds between jurisdictions.

According to a translated version of the document, prosecutors should consider privacy coins, cryptocurrency mixers and unusually large transactions as potential warning signs during money laundering investigations.

The researchers also recommended greater use of blockchain evidence. In addition, they called for standardized procedures when authorities seize and manage digital assets.

The Report Does Not Introduce New Crypto Laws

Importantly, the research article does not represent a new Chinese law or official regulation.

However, investors may view the recommendations as a signal of how legal authorities could approach future cryptocurrency enforcement. This is particularly significant because China already maintains strict restrictions on crypto trading and related activities.

As a result, the report has created additional uncertainty for projects focused on anonymous or private transactions.

The development follows similar regulatory pressure in other regions. Earlier this year, Dubai introduced restrictions on privacy coins due to concerns involving anti-money laundering rules and international sanctions.

Zcash and Monero Prices Decline

The total market capitalization of the privacy coin sector dropped by more than 2% to approximately $50.41 billion.

Zcash recorded the largest decline among the leading privacy-focused cryptocurrencies. ZEC fell by more than 4% to around $504.21 at the time of reporting.

Monero also moved lower. The XMR price declined by approximately 2% to $322.50.

The losses suggest that investors are concerned about the possible impact of stricter enforcement against anonymous cryptocurrency transactions.

Zcash Investors Await the Ironwood Upgrade

Despite the latest decline, traders are also monitoring Zcash ahead of its expected Ironwood upgrade.

The upgrade is scheduled to launch on July 28. Therefore, investors will be watching closely to see whether the network improvements can support renewed demand for ZEC.

Expectations surrounding the update could influence Zcash price movements in the coming weeks. However, regulatory concerns may continue to limit investor confidence.

Regulatory Pressure Remains a Major Risk

Privacy coins have traditionally attracted users who want greater confidentiality when sending or receiving cryptocurrency.

However, regulators remain concerned that the same privacy features could be used to hide criminal activity, avoid sanctions or move illegal funds.

Consequently, projects such as Zcash and Monero continue to face greater regulatory risk than many other cryptocurrencies.

The latest report from Chinese legal researchers highlights the importance of monitoring regulatory developments alongside market prices. It also shows that governments are increasing their focus on anonymous transactions, cryptocurrency mixers and platforms that do not require identity verification.
