Xi Jinping Calls for Stable and Cooperative US-China Relations

Chinese President Xi Jinping praised what he described as a “new positioning” in relations between China and the United States following his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday.

According to a statement released by China’s foreign ministry, both leaders agreed that the relationship between the world’s two largest economies should focus on constructive engagement and long-term strategic stability over the coming years.

Xi Promotes Cooperation With Controlled Competition

Xi Jinping said the future framework for U.S.-China relations should prioritize cooperation while allowing for measured competition between the two countries.

He described the approach as a form of “normal stability” where disagreements remain manageable and a “lasting stability” where peace can continue over the long term.

The Chinese president also called for expanded cooperation across several sectors, including trade, healthcare, agriculture, tourism, law enforcement, and people-to-people exchanges.

Taiwan Remains a Major Source of Tension

Despite emphasizing cooperation, Xi warned that the issue of Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive points in relations between Washington and Beijing.

China continues to claim Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan’s government rejects Beijing’s position.

Xi urged the United States to exercise “utmost caution” when handling Taiwan-related matters, warning that mismanagement of the issue could severely damage bilateral relations.

Xi Warns of Potential Conflict Over Taiwan

The Chinese leader warned that if tensions surrounding Taiwan are handled improperly, the United States and China could move toward direct confrontation.

Xi stated that such a scenario could place the entire U.S.-China relationship in an extremely dangerous position and increase the risk of broader conflict between the two global powers.
