U.S. and Iran Reach Tentative Peace Agreement Awaiting Trump’s Approval
The United States and Iran have reportedly finalized a preliminary agreement that would extend the current ceasefire and pave the way for further negotiations regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.
According to multiple media reports, the proposed deal is awaiting final approval from U.S. President Donald Trump before it can officially move forward.
The development represents one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs since the conflict began earlier this year.
Markets React Cautiously to Peace Deal Reports
Financial markets reacted modestly to the reports.
U.S. stock futures traded largely unchanged on Friday after posting gains in the previous session as news of the potential agreement emerged.
Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices remained near $93.75 per barrel. Although prices have retreated from recent highs above $100 per barrel, they continue to trade well above levels seen before the conflict erupted.
Investors remain cautious as they wait for official confirmation from both Washington and Tehran.
Details of the Proposed Agreement
According to Axios, which first reported the development, U.S. and Iranian officials have reached an agreement on a 60-day memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The proposal reportedly includes several major provisions aimed at reducing tensions and restoring stability in the region.
One U.S. official told Axios that President Trump has already been briefed on the agreement and requested additional time to review its details before making a final decision.
The memorandum would reportedly guarantee unrestricted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and end the current U.S. naval blockade affecting Iranian ports and coastal areas.
The agreement would also include a commitment from Iran not to pursue the development of nuclear weapons.
Strait of Hormuz Central to Negotiations
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically important waterways in the world, handling a significant portion of global oil shipments.
Iranian media previously reported that a draft version of the agreement would restore commercial shipping activity through the strait to pre-war levels within a month.
Reports also suggested that Iran and Oman could jointly oversee maritime traffic through the channel.
However, President Trump later dismissed claims that any single nation would exercise control over the vital shipping route, emphasizing the strategic importance of maintaining free navigation through the waterway.
Potential Turning Point in the Conflict
A formal agreement between the United States and Iran would mark the most important breakthrough since hostilities began at the end of February.
The conflict intensified after a joint military campaign involving the United States and Israel targeted Iranian assets.
Since early April, all sides have largely operated under a fragile ceasefire while diplomatic efforts continued behind the scenes.
The proposed agreement could potentially transform that temporary arrangement into a broader framework for long-term negotiations.
Recent Military Incidents Highlight Ongoing Risks
Despite progress on the diplomatic front, tensions in the region remain elevated.
Earlier in the week, hopes for a peace agreement were briefly shaken by renewed military activity in the Gulf region.
According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), Iranian forces launched a ballistic missile toward Kuwait on Wednesday. Kuwaiti defense systems reportedly intercepted the missile successfully.
CENTCOM also stated that Iranian forces launched multiple attack drones in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. forces reportedly intercepted the drones and prevented an additional launch from a ground control facility in Bandar Abbas.
Iran and U.S. Offer Conflicting Accounts
Iranian state media provided a different version of events, claiming that Iranian naval forces fired warning shots at several vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz without authorization.
According to the reports, the ships altered course and retreated following the warning.
Iranian media also broadcast footage showing actions by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in response to what Tehran described as attacks originating from the Bandar Abbas region.
The conflicting accounts underscore the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the challenges that remain in achieving a lasting resolution.
Regional Tensions Remain Elevated
The recent incidents raised concerns that direct hostilities between the United States and Iran could resume despite ongoing negotiations.
Iran has repeatedly threatened retaliation following recent U.S. military strikes, while U.S. officials have maintained that their actions were defensive in nature and consistent with existing ceasefire arrangements.
Adding to the uncertainty, clashes involving Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon have continued, keeping broader Middle East tensions elevated.
Investors Focus on Next Steps
For now, global markets remain focused on whether President Trump will approve the proposed agreement and whether Iranian leaders will formally endorse its terms.
A successful deal could help stabilize energy markets, reduce geopolitical risk, and improve investor confidence worldwide.
However, until official confirmation is received, traders are likely to remain cautious as they monitor developments across the Middle East.
