SoftBank Group is reportedly seeking to raise more than $11 billion through a major bond offering as the Japanese conglomerate increases its investments in artificial intelligence.

According to Bloomberg News, the fundraising plan reflects SoftBank’s growing financial commitment to AI, particularly its investment in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.

SoftBank Targets More Than $11 Billion in Funding

SoftBank is looking to issue approximately $10 billion in U.S. dollar-denominated bonds across three different maturities.

The company is also planning to sell around €1 billion, or roughly $1.1 billion, in euro-denominated notes across two maturities.

If completed, the combined bond sale would exceed $11 billion.

OpenAI Investment Is a Key Priority

Part of the proceeds from the bond offering is expected to finance an additional investment in OpenAI.

That follow-on investment is reportedly scheduled to close next month.

SoftBank has already committed nearly $65 billion to OpenAI, significantly increasing its exposure to the artificial intelligence company.

As a result, SoftBank’s future financial performance is becoming more closely linked to the success and valuation of OpenAI.

AI Investments Drive SoftBank’s Debt Strategy

SoftBank has positioned artificial intelligence as one of its most important long-term investment themes.

The planned bond sale shows how the group is increasingly using debt markets to finance its expansion into AI.

Large technology investments often require substantial capital, and SoftBank appears willing to take on additional borrowing to support its strategy.

SoftBank Holds Speculative-Grade Credit Rating

SoftBank currently carries a BB+ credit rating from S&P Global Ratings.

That rating is the highest level within the speculative-grade category, according to Bloomberg.

The proposed bond deal would rank among the largest high-yield debt offerings if completed.

Bond Sale Highlights Scale of AI Funding Boom

The size of SoftBank’s planned fundraising also highlights the growing amount of capital being directed toward artificial intelligence.

Technology companies and investors are spending heavily on AI infrastructure, model development and strategic partnerships.

SoftBank’s latest financing plan shows how debt is becoming an increasingly important tool for supporting these large-scale AI investments.

Investors will now be watching the terms of the bond offering, SoftBank’s additional OpenAI investment and how the company manages its growing exposure to the artificial intelligence sector.
