Microsoft Turns to Amazon as GitHub AI Demand Strains Capacity
Microsoft is reportedly using cloud infrastructure from rival Amazon to address capacity problems at GitHub, as artificial intelligence drives a sharp increase in software development activity.
According to Business Insider, GitHub plans to expand its computing capacity through Amazon Web Services, also known as AWS.
The report cited two people familiar with the plans.
GitHub Adds AWS Capacity Despite Azure Migration
The decision comes despite Microsoft’s long-term plan to transfer GitHub’s infrastructure entirely to its Azure cloud platform by 2027.
Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018. Since then, the company has been working to move the software development platform away from external infrastructure and deeper into its own cloud ecosystem.
However, rapidly growing demand for AI coding services appears to have created an immediate need for additional computing resources.
AI Coding Tools Drive GitHub Activity Higher
Artificial intelligence tools now allow developers to generate, review and modify software code much faster than before.
As a result, activity across GitHub has increased significantly.
GitHub Chief Operating Officer Kyle Daigle said in April that the platform was on track to record 14 billion commits in 2026. Commits measure changes made to software code.
That would represent a dramatic increase from approximately 1 billion commits in 2025.
Microsoft Confirms GitHub Uses Multiple Cloud Providers
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that GitHub relies on several cloud providers. However, the company declined to specifically confirm Amazon’s involvement.
The spokesperson said the rapid growth of “agentic development” had tested the limits of GitHub’s infrastructure.
Agentic development refers to the use of AI systems that can independently perform coding tasks, make decisions and complete parts of the software development process.
Microsoft is now accelerating GitHub’s migration to Azure while continuing to use a multi-cloud strategy to handle growing demand.
GitHub Outages Raise Infrastructure Concerns
GitHub has reportedly experienced dozens of significant outages this year as activity on the platform increased.
These disruptions highlight the pressure that AI-generated coding activity is placing on the company’s infrastructure.
Using AWS could give GitHub access to additional computing power while Microsoft continues expanding Azure capacity and completing the platform’s broader cloud migration.
The move also demonstrates how rapidly growing AI demand is forcing major technology companies to seek infrastructure support, even from their closest competitors.
