Gold Prices Rebound From Two-Month Low as Fed Rate Outlook Takes Focus

Gold prices recovered on Thursday after falling to their lowest level since early August, as investors assessed rising geopolitical tensions, inflation concerns, and the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook.

Spot gold gained 0.5% to trade at $4,129.25 per ounce by 09:32 ET (13:32 GMT). Meanwhile, U.S. gold futures advanced 0.3% to $4,153.25 per ounce.

The recovery came as renewed uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz raised concerns about global energy supplies. However, expectations of additional Federal Reserve interest rate increases continued to limit gold’s upside potential.

Middle East Tensions Support Gold Prices

Geopolitical risks remained a major influence on the gold market, particularly as tensions involving Iran continued to escalate.

Reports indicated that Iran had intensified attacks on oil tankers traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transportation routes.

Meanwhile, media reports suggested that the White House was evaluating potential military action against Iranian targets ahead of the November U.S. midterm elections.

Although Middle Eastern oil shipments briefly returned to pre-conflict levels last month, uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the nearby Bab el-Mandeb Strait continued to disrupt shipping operations.

Consequently, transportation costs climbed to record levels, adding further pressure to global energy markets.

Neil Welsh, Head of Metals at Britannia Global Markets, highlighted the continuing uncertainty surrounding U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations.

According to Welsh, disagreements over uranium enrichment rights remain a major obstacle to diplomatic progress, keeping geopolitical risks elevated across the Middle East.

Gulf Coast Storm Adds Pressure to Energy Markets

Energy supply concerns intensified as a powerful storm near the U.S. Gulf Coast disrupted offshore oil and natural gas production.

According to production data cited by Reuters, energy companies had suspended more than 25% of current oil output and over 16% of natural gas production by Wednesday.

These disruptions added to existing concerns about global energy supplies and the potential for further increases in oil and gas prices.

Higher energy costs can contribute to persistent inflation, complicating the outlook for central bank monetary policy.

For gold investors, this creates a mixed environment.

Although geopolitical uncertainty can increase demand for safe-haven assets, rising inflation may encourage central banks to maintain higher interest rates.

As a result, gold prices face competing forces from geopolitical demand and tighter monetary conditions.

Federal Reserve Minutes Signal Potential December Rate Hike

The latest Federal Reserve meeting minutes added pressure to the precious metals market by reinforcing expectations of further monetary tightening.

All 19 Federal Reserve policymakers supported the central bank’s September interest rate increase.

Furthermore, most officials indicated that another rate hike could become appropriate before the end of 2026.

However, policymakers showed limited urgency to raise borrowing costs again during the upcoming October meeting.

According to CME FedWatch probabilities cited in the report, financial markets assigned approximately a 20% chance to an October interest rate increase.

By comparison, the probability of another rate hike by December stood near 80%.

These expectations suggest that investors remain concerned about persistent inflation and the possibility of additional monetary tightening.

Stronger U.S. Dollar Limits Gold’s Recovery

The prospect of higher U.S. interest rates has also supported the U.S. dollar, creating another challenge for gold prices.

Because gold is denominated in dollars, a stronger American currency makes the precious metal more expensive for investors holding other currencies.

Additionally, higher interest rates increase the relative appeal of interest-bearing investments compared with non-yielding assets such as gold.

Consequently, further Federal Reserve tightening could limit the strength of any sustained recovery in bullion prices.

Nevertheless, continued geopolitical uncertainty and demand from institutional buyers may help offset some of these pressures.

Central Bank Gold Purchases Provide Market Support

Despite the challenging interest rate environment, central bank gold demand remains an important source of support for the precious metal.

Analysts at ANZ noted that continued purchases by central banks helped prevent deeper declines in gold prices.

China has been particularly active in expanding its official gold reserves.

The People’s Bank of China reportedly added 740,000 ounces of gold during September, extending its accumulation streak to 23 consecutive months.

These purchases demonstrate sustained interest in gold as a reserve asset, even as higher interest rates and a stronger U.S. dollar create short-term market pressure.

Persistent central bank demand could provide a degree of stability if gold prices face renewed selling pressure.

Gold Price Outlook: What Investors Should Watch Next

The near-term outlook for gold remains closely linked to three major factors: Federal Reserve interest rate expectations, geopolitical developments, and central bank buying activity.

Further escalation in the Middle East could strengthen safe-haven demand for bullion, particularly if disruptions to global energy supplies intensify.

However, continued inflationary pressure may reinforce expectations of additional Federal Reserve rate increases, potentially supporting the dollar and weighing on gold.

Meanwhile, strong central bank purchases could help cushion the market against sharper declines.

For now, gold prices remain above $4,100 per ounce, with investors closely monitoring upcoming U.S. economic data, Federal Reserve policy signals, and developments in the Middle East for clues about the precious metal’s next major move.
