Gold prices advanced on Monday as investors lowered expectations for another Federal Reserve interest rate hike following comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. The shift in monetary policy expectations supported precious metals, pushing US gold futures above the $4,200-per-ounce mark.

Spot gold gained 0.4% to $4,180.29 an ounce by 00:51 ET (04:51 GMT), while US gold futures climbed 0.5% to $4,200.92.

Other precious metals also recorded gains. Silver increased 1.3% to $57.73 an ounce, while platinum rose 1.3% to $1,655.53. Meanwhile, palladium advanced 1.5% to $1,132.74.

The US Dollar Index remained relatively stable, edging 0.04% lower to 101.80.

Gold Prices Rise as Fed Rate Hike Expectations Decline

Gold recovered some ground after ending the previous week with a 0.7% loss, supported by changing expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve’s next monetary policy decision.

Following Warsh’s latest remarks, traders reduced the probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate increase to below 20%.

Investors interpreted his comments as suggesting that the central bank could leave borrowing costs unchanged at its upcoming policy meeting.

Previously, stronger-than-expected US inflation figures had increased speculation about additional monetary tightening. The inflation data also supported the US dollar, creating additional pressure on precious metals.

However, Warsh’s statements prompted markets to reconsider the likelihood of another rate increase, interrupting the dollar’s upward momentum.

Higher interest rates generally reduce gold’s appeal because the precious metal does not generate interest income. Conversely, expectations for stable or lower borrowing costs can support demand for bullion.

Gold Holds Above $4,000 Despite Geopolitical Pressures

Despite recent volatility, gold has maintained its position above the psychologically important $4,000-per-ounce level since August.

Safe-haven demand has helped support prices following a significant decline earlier this year, when geopolitical turmoil pushed the precious metal into bear-market territory.

Gold remains approximately 20% below its level when the US-Iran conflict began in late February, reflecting the substantial market disruption associated with the war.

Nevertheless, ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and concerns about the global economic outlook continue to encourage some investors to maintain exposure to gold.

The precious metal’s ability to remain above $4,000 highlights the importance of this price area as traders evaluate the next potential market direction.

ANZ Analysts Highlight Gold’s Appeal as a Long-Term Hedge

Analysts at ANZ believe that growing concerns about government debt and fiscal sustainability could strengthen gold’s long-term investment appeal.

According to the bank, elevated government bond yields increasingly reflect concerns about public finances rather than simply signaling stronger economic growth.

This development could make gold more attractive as a hedge against financial instability and sovereign debt risks.

However, analysts also cautioned that high bond yields and a relatively strong US dollar could continue weighing on bullion in the near term.

As a result, gold may experience additional selling pressure before establishing a more sustained upward trend.

Chinese Demand and Central Bank Buying Support Gold

Demand from Chinese investors remains another important factor supporting the precious metals market.

With China’s equity and property sectors facing persistent challenges, domestic investors have increasingly turned toward gold as an alternative store of value.

Meanwhile, central banks have continued diversifying their foreign exchange reserves to reduce dependence on individual reserve assets.

These purchases provide an additional source of structural demand for bullion, potentially helping offset periods of weaker investment appetite.

ANZ analysts believe that sustained demand from both private investors and central banks could contribute to higher gold prices over the longer term.

ANZ Forecasts Gold Above $5,000 in 2027

Looking ahead, ANZ expects gold’s upside potential to remain limited in the short term as investors navigate uncertainty surrounding Federal Reserve policy, US bond yields and the dollar.

Nevertheless, the bank maintains a more optimistic longer-term outlook, forecasting that gold prices could rise above $5,000 an ounce in 2027.

The projection depends partly on continued investment inflows and sustained gold purchases by central banks.

Although elevated interest rates could temporarily restrict further gains, fiscal concerns, reserve diversification and safe-haven demand may continue supporting the precious metal.

For now, investors will closely monitor upcoming Federal Reserve decisions and US economic indicators for further clues about the direction of interest rates.

Ultimately, the outlook for gold prices will depend on how monetary policy expectations interact with global investment demand, geopolitical developments and broader financial market conditions.
