Looking for the biggest developments in crypto today? Here are the latest stories affecting Bitcoin, blockchain, DeFi, Web3 and cryptocurrency regulation.

Today’s crypto news includes a major U.S. crackdown on the Xinbi marketplace, a planned restructuring at Consensys and a sharp collapse in Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP memecoin shortly after launch.

U.S. Authorities Target Xinbi Scam Marketplace

U.S. authorities have restrained more than $52 million in cryptocurrency linked to Xinbi Guarantee and its vendor network as part of a broader operation against the alleged scam marketplace.

The U.S. Department of Justice said its Scam Center Strike Force seized two wallets used by Xinbi to collect vendor payments. The wallets reportedly held around $12 million in crypto.

Authorities are also seeking restraints on 47 additional wallets believed to be connected to money laundering activity across the Xinbi network.

DOJ Seizes Xinbi Telegram Channels

The Justice Department also targeted Xinbi’s communications infrastructure.

A U.S. District Court in Washington authorized the seizure of Telegram channels used to host the marketplace on September 7.

According to the unsealed warrant, vendors allegedly used the channels to advertise services including money laundering, customized scam-investment websites and recruitment for scam compounds operating in Southeast Asia.

The operation shows that U.S. authorities are increasingly targeting not only individual scammers but also the infrastructure supporting large-scale fraud networks.

Stablecoin issuer Tether was also credited with assisting investigators.

Consensys Plans Major Corporate Split

Elsewhere in the crypto industry, Consensys Software announced plans to separate its MetaMask consumer business from its institutional blockchain operations.

The Ethereum-focused software company expects the restructuring to be completed by the end of 2026.

Under the plan, MetaMask will become an independent company focused primarily on consumer products.

Joe Lubin is expected to serve as chairman and CEO of MetaMask while also becoming executive chairman of the newly structured Consensys.

MetaMask to Expand Beyond Crypto Wallets

MetaMask will continue to focus on self-custody but plans to broaden its services.

The company is expected to expand into areas such as payments, savings, investing and traditional financial products.

This could position MetaMask as a broader financial platform rather than simply a cryptocurrency wallet.

Meanwhile, the new Consensys will focus more heavily on institutional blockchain infrastructure.

New Consensys to Focus on Ethereum Infrastructure

The institutional company will include businesses and protocols such as Linea, Besu and Teku.

Mike Kriak will lead the company as CEO, while David Cunningham will serve as president.

Its strategy will focus on Ethereum infrastructure and helping financial institutions adopt blockchain technology.

Key areas are expected to include tokenization, stablecoins and other onchain financial services.

Hunter Biden’s LAPTOP Memecoin Collapses

Another major crypto story involved Hunter Biden’s newly launched LAPTOP memecoin.

The token fell about 95.7% during its first hour of trading on Wednesday.

Issued on Ethereum layer-2 network Base, LAPTOP opened at around $199.50 before plunging to approximately $4.36 by 1:00 p.m. UTC, according to CoinGecko data.

Despite the collapse, the token generated more than $3 million in trading volume.

Political Memecoin Draws Attention

Hunter Biden described the token as an attempt to reclaim the symbolism surrounding the laptop controversy that followed him for years.

In a post on X, he presented the project as a symbol of resilience and recovery.

However, Biden also acknowledged widespread skepticism surrounding politically themed memecoins.

He warned buyers not to expect him or anyone else to increase the token’s value.

LAPTOP Token Revives Old Political Controversy

The LAPTOP memecoin refers to the controversy surrounding a MacBook reportedly left by Hunter Biden at a Delaware repair shop in 2019.

Files and emails said to have come from the device later became a major political issue ahead of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

The controversy was heavily used by Donald Trump’s allies against Hunter Biden and his father, Joe Biden.

The launch of the LAPTOP token shows how political narratives continue to intersect with speculative cryptocurrency markets.

Crypto Market Focus Shifts to Regulation and Industry Restructuring

Today’s developments highlight several important themes across the crypto sector.

The Xinbi investigation shows that regulators are expanding enforcement against crypto-linked fraud networks.

At the same time, the Consensys restructuring reflects the growing divide between consumer crypto services and institutional blockchain infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the collapse of the LAPTOP memecoin once again demonstrates the extreme volatility and speculative risks surrounding newly launched tokens.

Together, these stories show how regulation, corporate restructuring and speculative trading continue to shape the cryptocurrency market.
