Crypto news today highlights several major developments affecting cryptocurrency exchanges, blockchain technology and digital asset regulation. From a security incident involving Coinbase to growing concerns over tokenized stocks, the cryptocurrency industry continues to face important challenges.
Meanwhile, Circle’s USDC has overtaken Tether’s USDT in euro-denominated stablecoin trading, reflecting the growing influence of European cryptocurrency regulations.
Here are the most important developments shaping the crypto market on October 28.
Coinbase Reports Customer Data Exposure Through Third-Party Provider
Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has confirmed that a security incident involving analytics provider Amplitude exposed contact information belonging to some of its customers.
According to the company, the incident affected a relatively small number of users. However, Coinbase emphasized that its internal systems had not been compromised.
The exchange also reassured customers that their cryptocurrency holdings and account funds remained unaffected.
Although Coinbase did not disclose the exact number of affected accounts, the incident has renewed concerns about data protection and cybersecurity risks across the digital asset industry.
The announcement follows reports of other security incidents involving financial institutions in South Korea.
Cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb is investigating a possible data exposure involving its internal workplace platform. Meanwhile, Daishin Securities reported that personal and credit information belonging to 38,490 customers had been compromised.
These incidents highlight the importance of strong security practices, particularly when cryptocurrency platforms rely on external technology providers.
Robinhood CEO Raises Concerns Over US Tokenization Regulations
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev has warned that regulatory uncertainty in the United States could discourage investors from transferring substantial financial assets onto blockchain networks.
Speaking during the company’s third-quarter earnings conference call, Tenev welcomed the Securities and Exchange Commission’s temporary regulatory exemption supporting tokenized securities.
However, he argued that the existing framework does not provide enough long-term certainty for institutional investors and other major market participants.
According to Tenev, investors may hesitate to commit significant capital to tokenized assets without knowing how regulations could change over the next several years.
He emphasized that additional legislation or permanent regulatory rules may be necessary to support the expansion of blockchain-based financial markets.
Traditional Companies Challenge Tokenized Stock Offerings
The development of tokenized equities has also encountered resistance from established corporations.
Microsoft, Alphabet and Goldman Sachs were among 16 companies that objected to proposals allowing their shares to trade through the planned OKXICE tokenized securities platform.
Separately, AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron criticized Robinhood’s tokenized stock products.
These objections underline the legal and regulatory difficulties facing companies seeking to bring traditional financial securities onto blockchain infrastructure.
Despite these challenges, tokenization remains an important area of development for financial technology firms seeking to modernize asset trading and ownership.
USDC Overtakes USDT in European Stablecoin Trading
Circle’s USDC has surpassed Tether’s USDT in euro-denominated stablecoin trading, according to new research from cryptocurrency market data provider Kaiko.
USDC now represents approximately 56% of stablecoin trading activity against the euro, a substantial increase from its 10% market share in January 2024.
The shift follows the introduction of the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, commonly known as MiCA.
Under the new regulatory framework, several major cryptocurrency exchanges have restricted access to USDT trading pairs for customers in the European Economic Area.
As a result, traders have increasingly turned toward stablecoins that comply with European requirements.
USDC Gains Liquidity Advantage Over Tether
Kaiko’s research also indicates that USDC has established a significant advantage in euro-denominated trading liquidity.
Order books for USDC trading pairs are now approximately 40% deeper than those of USDT, suggesting stronger available liquidity for traders exchanging euros and stablecoins.
Nevertheless, Tether continues to dominate the global stablecoin market.
Its circulating supply remains approximately 2.5 times larger than USDC’s, demonstrating that USDT retains a substantial lead internationally despite losing ground in European trading.
The European Banking Authority has also designated USDC as the European Union’s first significant e-money token under MiCA.
Beginning November 12, 2026, the European regulator will assume direct responsibility for overseeing key aspects of USDC’s reserves, liquidity and redemption arrangements.
US Stablecoin Regulations Could Reshape the Crypto Market
Regulatory developments in the United States could produce similar changes in the stablecoin industry.
The recently introduced GENIUS Act establishes a federal framework for payment stablecoins, including requirements covering reserves, redemption procedures and regulatory oversight.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency has finalized implementing regulations for stablecoin issuers under its supervision, with the rules scheduled to take effect on January 18, 2027.
Additional restrictions beginning July 18, 2028, will limit the ability of cryptocurrency platforms to offer stablecoins from issuers that do not satisfy applicable regulatory requirements.
These changes could strengthen Circle’s competitive position as the company continues expanding its presence in regulated cryptocurrency markets.
Meanwhile, Tether is pursuing opportunities in the United States through its separately regulated USAT stablecoin.
The evolving regulatory environment could significantly influence how stablecoins compete for market share in the coming years.
For investors, today’s cryptocurrency developments highlight three important themes: cybersecurity risks, regulatory uncertainty surrounding tokenized assets and intensifying competition between major stablecoin issuers.
Together, these trends demonstrate how regulatory decisions and institutional adoption are increasingly influencing the future of the cryptocurrency industry.
