Asian stocks rallied sharply on Wednesday as strong earnings from South Korean semiconductor giant SK Hynix reignited investor confidence in the artificial intelligence sector.
South Korean equities led the regional gains, while investors prepared for the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate decision and quarterly earnings from major U.S. technology companies.
The positive momentum followed overnight gains on Wall Street, driven primarily by technology stocks. Meanwhile, U.S. stock futures showed mixed performance during Asian trading, with Nasdaq futures outperforming other major contracts.
South Korean Stocks Surge as SK Hynix Reports Record Earnings
South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index jumped 6.6%, reaching its highest level in two weeks as semiconductor companies attracted strong buying interest.
SK Hynix shares surged nearly 11% after the chipmaker announced exceptional third-quarter financial results. Operating profit increased by approximately 632% from a year earlier, supported by booming demand for advanced memory chips used in artificial intelligence systems.
The company also revealed plans for an additional 60 trillion won in shareholder returns, bringing its planned total distributions for 2026 to approximately 100 trillion won.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics shares climbed around 9%, benefiting from renewed optimism surrounding the global semiconductor industry.
AI Stocks Gain Momentum Across Asian Markets
The enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence extended beyond South Korea, lifting technology shares across several major Asian markets.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 advanced more than 1%, although the broader TOPIX index slipped slightly.
Japanese chipmakers recorded particularly strong performances. Kioxia Holdings shares soared nearly 14%, while electronic components manufacturer Taiyo Yuden gained more than 7%.
Chinese equities also moved higher. The Shanghai Composite and CSI 300 indexes each advanced approximately 0.9%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index posted a modest 0.2% increase.
The broader rally reflected improving sentiment toward AI investments following recent financing announcements and Anthropic’s filing for an initial public offering.
However, concerns remain over the enormous costs of expanding AI infrastructure and whether technology companies can generate sufficient profits to justify their spending.
Investors are therefore closely watching upcoming earnings from Alphabet and Microsoft for further evidence that artificial intelligence investments are translating into sustainable revenue growth.
Federal Reserve Interest Rate Decision Takes Center Stage
Despite the strong performance of Asian technology shares, investors remained cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy announcement later on Wednesday.
The U.S. central bank is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged. Nevertheless, financial markets will closely examine its guidance for indications of future policy decisions.
Persistent inflation and elevated energy prices have complicated the economic outlook, raising questions about how long borrowing costs could remain elevated.
Any signals regarding future interest rate increases could significantly influence global equities, bond yields and currency markets.
Australia Inflation and New Zealand Rate Decision Draw Attention
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 finished the session largely unchanged following stronger-than-expected inflation figures.
Data showed that underlying consumer prices accelerated during the third quarter, increasing expectations that the Reserve Bank of Australia could raise interest rates at its next policy meeting.
In New Zealand, the NZX 50 edged approximately 0.1% higher after the Reserve Bank of New Zealand unexpectedly maintained its benchmark interest rate at 2.75%.
The decision surprised investors who had anticipated another increase in borrowing costs.
Elsewhere, Singapore’s Straits Times Index posted a marginal gain, while India’s Nifty 50 declined approximately 0.4%.
Jio Platforms Debuts Strongly as Oil Prices Climb
Indian telecommunications and digital services company Jio Platforms attracted significant investor interest during its stock market debut.
Shares jumped more than 20% following the company’s highly anticipated initial public offering, one of the largest in Indian market history.
Meanwhile, rising crude oil prices added another layer of uncertainty to the global economic outlook.
Brent crude climbed above $115 per barrel amid concerns about energy supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions.
Higher oil prices could increase inflationary pressures worldwide, potentially limiting central banks’ ability to reduce interest rates.
Although the latest Asian stock market rally reflects renewed enthusiasm for artificial intelligence, investors remain focused on the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook, upcoming technology earnings and the potential economic impact of persistently high energy costs.
