Crypto.com has announced plans to discontinue its consumer app services in Hong Kong on February 1, 2027, amid changes in the region’s cryptocurrency regulatory environment.

The cryptocurrency exchange confirmed that affected customers have already been notified and will receive instructions on withdrawing their assets and closing their accounts.

However, the decision does not represent a complete withdrawal from Hong Kong. Crypto.com intends to continue pursuing regulatory approval for its institutional cryptocurrency exchange.

Crypto.com to Shut Down Hong Kong Consumer App in February 2027

Crypto.com confirmed on Monday, November 2, that its consumer-facing application will cease operating in Hong Kong from February 1, 2027.

The company said the decision forms part of its broader efforts to optimize global operations and focus resources on markets offering sustainable long-term growth opportunities.

According to local media outlet HK01, Crypto.com cited regulatory changes in notifications sent to customers in Hong Kong.

However, the exchange has not publicly identified the specific regulatory requirements responsible for the decision.

The announcement comes as Hong Kong continues developing its regulatory framework for cryptocurrency exchanges and digital asset trading platforms.

Crypto.com Customers to Receive Withdrawal Instructions

The upcoming shutdown will affect customers using Crypto.com’s consumer application in Hong Kong.

The exchange confirmed that impacted users have received advance notice about the planned discontinuation of services.

Customers will also receive detailed instructions explaining how to close their accounts and withdraw their remaining cryptocurrency holdings.

Crypto.com stated that support services would remain available to help users complete the process in an orderly manner.

However, the company has not publicly disclosed whether individual services will become unavailable before the February 1 shutdown.

Affected customers should therefore monitor official Crypto.com communications for updates concerning withdrawal procedures and account closures.

Crypto.com Continues Pursuing Hong Kong Exchange License

Despite discontinuing its retail application, Crypto.com remains interested in operating a regulated institutional cryptocurrency exchange in Hong Kong.

The company is seeking approval through Foris DAX HK Limited, a separate legal entity responsible for its institutional exchange licensing application.

Meanwhile, the consumer application scheduled for closure is operated by Foris DAX MT Limited.

This distinction is important because the shutdown of the consumer platform does not automatically affect the company’s institutional licensing efforts.

Crypto.com confirmed that it intends to continue seeking authorization from Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC).

The proposed license would allow the company to operate its institutional-grade Crypto.com Exchange platform under the region’s virtual asset regulatory framework.

Hong Kong Crypto License Application Remains Pending

According to the Securities and Futures Commission’s public register, Foris DAX HK Limited submitted its virtual asset trading platform (VATP) license application on February 9, 2024.

As of November 2026, the application remains under review, approximately two years and nine months after its initial submission.

The company currently holds a regulatory status described as “deemed-to-be-licensed.”

This designation forms part of Hong Kong’s transitional licensing arrangements for cryptocurrency businesses.

However, the status does not represent formal regulatory approval.

The SFC makes clear that companies operating under transitional arrangements have not necessarily satisfied all requirements applicable to fully licensed virtual asset trading platforms.

Consequently, Crypto.com’s institutional exchange application remains subject to the regulator’s final decision.

Hong Kong Crypto Regulations Shape Exchange Operations

Hong Kong has introduced a comprehensive licensing framework aimed at strengthening oversight of cryptocurrency trading platforms.

The regulatory regime places greater emphasis on investor protection, operational security, anti-money laundering controls, and the responsible handling of customer assets.

Cryptocurrency exchanges seeking to operate in the region must comply with the relevant licensing and supervisory requirements.

These obligations have increased regulatory scrutiny across the digital asset industry.

For international cryptocurrency businesses, the changing environment can influence decisions about which services to offer and how to structure local operations.

Crypto.com’s decision highlights the challenges exchanges may face when balancing regulatory compliance with their broader commercial strategies.

However, the company has not confirmed that any particular licensing requirement directly caused the consumer app shutdown.

Crypto.com Hong Kong Outlook Remains Focused on Institutional Services

Crypto.com’s decision to discontinue its consumer application marks a significant adjustment to its Hong Kong operations.

While retail customers will lose access to the affected platform in February 2027, the company continues pursuing opportunities in the institutional cryptocurrency market.

Its pending regulatory application suggests that Hong Kong remains part of its longer-term business strategy.

Nevertheless, the future of its institutional exchange depends on receiving formal authorization from the Securities and Futures Commission.

For now, affected customers will need to follow the exchange’s account closure and withdrawal procedures.

The development also illustrates how evolving cryptocurrency regulations continue to influence the operations and strategic priorities of major digital asset exchanges.
