Binance’s SAFU Bitcoin holdings have fallen by nearly 50% after the cryptocurrency exchange used part of its emergency reserves to address losses from a massive $6.3 billion security breach.
The exchange’s publicly disclosed Bitcoin protection wallet held approximately 7,500 BTC on Monday, November 2, following a transfer of 7,499 BTC over the weekend.
The remaining Bitcoin was valued at around $583 million, compared with approximately 15,000 BTC held before the transfer.
Although Binance has pledged to restore its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) to approximately $1 billion, the exchange has not established a specific deadline for replenishing reserves deployed following the attack.
Binance SAFU Bitcoin Reserves Drop After $6.3 Billion Hack
The substantial reduction in Binance’s emergency Bitcoin holdings comes as the exchange continues recovering from one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts ever recorded.
The cyberattack, which occurred on October 29, resulted in approximately $6.3 billion worth of stolen digital assets.
Following the incident, Binance temporarily suspended cryptocurrency withdrawals while implementing security measures and working to replace affected customer assets.
The FBI subsequently attributed the attack to North Korean hackers operating under the name TraderTraitor.
Meanwhile, Binance confirmed that the 7,499 BTC transfer formed part of its decision to deploy SAFU reserves to support the recovery.
Importantly, the reduction represents the balance of a publicly disclosed SAFU Bitcoin wallet rather than a confirmed 50% decline in the entire user protection fund.
Binance Restores 95% of Affected Cryptocurrency Assets
Despite the unprecedented scale of the attack, Binance has reported significant progress in replacing the stolen assets.
The exchange announced that approximately 95% of affected assets had been replenished by Monday, improving from the 90% reported a day earlier.
However, the replenishment figure refers to assets replaced using Binance’s financial resources, not necessarily cryptocurrency recovered directly from the hackers.
Furthermore, Binance began restoring customer withdrawal services in phases on Sunday, November 1.
The exchange continues acquiring the remaining affected cryptocurrencies through regular market purchases and over-the-counter transactions.
Some of these tokens have limited market liquidity, potentially complicating efforts to complete the replacement process.
How Binance Is Financing the Recovery
Binance is drawing on several financial resources to cover the losses associated with the security breach.
These include its corporate treasury, the SAFU emergency protection fund, and a portion of its futures insurance fund.
The company has emphasized that it intends to absorb the financial consequences of the attack rather than transfer losses to customers.
Nevertheless, the deployment of emergency reserves has raised questions about the remaining SAFU balance and the timeline for restoring its original size.
Binance SAFU Fund Has No Fixed Replenishment Deadline
The Secure Asset Fund for Users was established to provide financial protection during extraordinary incidents, including major security breaches.
Binance’s existing SAFU policy requires regular monitoring of the fund’s market value.
Under the policy, if the fund’s value falls below $800 million because of Bitcoin price fluctuations, Binance is expected to rebalance its holdings to restore the fund to approximately $1 billion.
However, this provision specifically addresses fluctuations in Bitcoin’s market price.
It does not establish a fixed deadline for replacing reserves withdrawn to compensate users following a cybersecurity incident.
Although Binance has committed to rebuilding the fund, uncertainty remains over how quickly the emergency reserves will return to their intended level.
According to the original report, the exchange had not immediately provided additional details regarding its remaining reserves, potential future SAFU deployments, or the replenishment schedule.
Binance Releases New Proof of Reserves Following Cyberattack
Alongside its financial recovery efforts, Binance has introduced additional transparency measures aimed at restoring customer confidence.
On Monday, November 2, the exchange announced that users could independently verify their account balances against a proof-of-reserves snapshot taken on Saturday, October 31.
The announcement followed the completion of the cryptographic verification process associated with the snapshot.
According to Binance, the reserve data indicated that customer holdings across 10 supported cryptocurrencies were backed by assets at a minimum ratio of 1:1.
These cryptocurrencies included Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Tether (USDT).
The verification system allows users to check whether their balances were included in the exchange’s reported reserve calculations.
However, proof of reserves should not be confused with a complete independent financial audit covering every potential liability and operational risk.
Additional Cryptocurrency Reserve Verification Planned
Binance also announced plans to conduct another proof-of-reserves snapshot on Wednesday, November 4.
The upcoming assessment is expected to include a broader selection of cryptocurrencies.
Generating the corresponding cryptographic proof could require approximately 40 to 50 hours because of the computational resources involved.
The additional verification process forms part of Binance’s efforts to demonstrate that customer assets remain adequately backed despite the recent security breach.
Binance SAFU Fund Outlook: Investor Confidence Remains Critical
The sharp reduction in Binance’s SAFU Bitcoin holdings highlights the financial challenges facing cryptocurrency exchanges after major cybersecurity incidents.
Although the exchange has replenished most of the affected assets, restoring emergency protection reserves remains an important part of its longer-term recovery.
The release of updated proof-of-reserves information could help reassure customers about the backing of their cryptocurrency holdings.
However, investors will likely continue monitoring the remaining SAFU reserves, the restoration of withdrawal services, and progress in replacing the outstanding assets.
Ultimately, Binance’s ability to rebuild its emergency fund and maintain transparent reserve reporting could play an important role in restoring confidence following the historic $6.3 billion hack.
