Binance and Polymarket Push Polygon Hard Fork to Recover $6.8M

Binance and Polymarket are seeking a Polygon hard fork to recover approximately $6.8 million in stolen cryptocurrency following separate security breaches.

The proposal aims to retrieve 70.49 million POL tokens currently held in five attacker-controlled wallets. Although Polygon block producers have already frozen the affected funds, additional network changes would be required to return them to their rightful owners.

Binance and Polymarket Propose Polygon Hard Fork

According to a governance proposal published on Wednesday, the recovery initiative would address cryptocurrency losses linked to both platforms.

The proposal identifies approximately 23.86 million POL tokens, valued at $2.31 million, across four wallets associated with the Polymarket security incident.

Meanwhile, another 46.63 million POL tokens, worth roughly $4.51 million, remain in a single address connected to the Binance breach.

Together, these holdings represent approximately $6.8 million in digital assets that the platforms hope to recover through a coordinated blockchain upgrade.

How the Polygon Hard Fork Would Recover Stolen Crypto

The proposed Polygon hard fork would introduce a targeted adjustment to the blockchain’s existing balances.

At a predetermined block, the network would remove the stolen POL tokens from the five identified attacker-controlled addresses.

The same amounts would then be transferred to verified recovery wallets designated by Binance and Polymarket.

Importantly, the operation would not increase or decrease POL’s total token supply.

Instead, it would redistribute the affected balances through a coordinated change to the network’s rules.

Polygon Validators Have Already Frozen the Stolen Funds

Polygon block producers have implemented restrictions preventing transactions from the addresses associated with the security incidents.

These measures have successfully stopped the affected POL tokens from moving across the network.

However, freezing the assets does not automatically enable their recovery.

The governance proposal explains that the existing restrictions are temporary safeguards rather than permanent solutions.

Consequently, a hard fork would be necessary to transfer the stolen cryptocurrency without requiring cooperation from the attackers.

Polygon Governance Approval Remains Necessary

The proposed recovery plan must receive governance approval before implementation.

Additionally, developers would need to test the changes on Polygon’s Amoy testnet to assess their functionality and potential network implications.

The proposal is scheduled for discussion on November 5, although no official activation date has been confirmed for the Polygon mainnet.

Until the required approvals and testing are completed, the stolen tokens will remain restricted under the existing measures.

Binance Hack and Polymarket Breach Trigger Recovery Efforts

The proposal follows two separate cryptocurrency security incidents reported in late October.

Binance experienced a major cyberattack on October 29 involving approximately $6.34 billion in affected digital assets across multiple blockchain networks.

The proposed Polygon recovery covers only a small portion of the assets associated with that broader incident.

Separately, Polymarket reported a security breach involving a compromised third-party provider, prompting the prediction market platform to temporarily suspend trading.

The two incidents have renewed attention on cryptocurrency security, blockchain governance, and the mechanisms available for recovering stolen digital assets.

What the Proposed Hard Fork Means for Polygon

The recovery initiative raises important questions about decentralization and the ability of blockchain networks to intervene following security breaches.

Although the proposed changes could return millions of dollars in stolen cryptocurrency, modifying recorded balances through a hard fork represents an exceptional intervention.

The governance proposal describes the measure as an extraordinary response to specific circumstances rather than a standard recovery mechanism.

For now, attention will focus on Polygon’s governance discussions, testing procedures, and the potential approval of the network upgrade.

A successful implementation could restore the affected funds to Binance and Polymarket. However, the broader implications for blockchain governance and transaction finality may remain subjects of debate.
