Asian currencies traded within narrow ranges on Tuesday as investors remained cautious ahead of important US inflation data. Meanwhile, the US dollar stayed close to an 18-month high, supported by geopolitical uncertainty and continued demand for safe-haven assets.

The US Dollar Index, which measures the greenback against six major currencies, declined 0.2% to 102.44 as of 03:55 GMT. The index had reached its highest level since April 2025 during the previous trading session.

Despite the modest pullback, the dollar remained supported by relatively high US interest rates, resilient economic growth, and concerns about global financial stability.

US Inflation Data Takes Center Stage as Dollar Remains Strong

Investors are closely monitoring Wednesday’s US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for fresh indications about the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy outlook.

The inflation figures represent one of the final major economic releases ahead of the Fed’s late-October policy meeting.

As a result, currency traders have largely avoided taking significant positions until the data provide greater clarity about future US interest rate decisions.

Meanwhile, renewed attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East and Ukraine have increased geopolitical uncertainty.

Elevated oil prices and US Treasury yields have also strengthened demand for the dollar, limiting the potential recovery of several Asian currencies.

Brent crude futures slipped 0.9% to $105.74 per barrel on Tuesday, partially reversing a 1.8% increase recorded during the previous session.

However, energy prices remained elevated amid continued concerns about potential supply disruptions.

Asian Currencies Trade Cautiously as Japanese Yen Gains

Most Asian foreign exchange markets recorded relatively modest movements, reflecting investor caution ahead of the upcoming US economic data.

The Japanese yen strengthened slightly against the dollar, with the USD/JPY currency pair declining 0.2%.

Meanwhile, the Chinese yuan showed limited movement. The offshore USD/CNH pair remained unchanged, while the onshore USD/CNY pair increased 0.1%.

The South Korean won weakened against the dollar, with USD/KRW rising 0.6% after declining 0.4% on Monday.

This movement contrasted with the generally subdued performance of other regional currencies.

The Singapore dollar also remained largely stable, with the USD/SGD pair showing minimal changes.

Indian Rupee Holds Gains Following Reserve Bank Intervention

The Indian rupee remained in focus after recording its strongest single-day advance in six months during Monday’s trading session.

The recovery followed measures introduced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to reduce demand for US dollars and limit speculative activity in currency markets.

On Tuesday, the USD/INR pair declined another 0.1% to 95.689, extending the rupee’s recovery after a drop of more than 1% in the currency pair during the previous session.

The Indian currency had closed Monday at 95.77 per dollar following central bank intervention in the foreign exchange market.

The RBI also introduced tighter restrictions on certain currency derivatives transactions, aiming to discourage speculative positioning and stabilize exchange rate conditions.

These measures helped support the rupee despite broader US dollar strength and continued uncertainty across international currency markets.

Australian Dollar Steady as RBA Signals Further Inflation Risks

The Australian dollar traded largely unchanged against its US counterpart, with the AUD/USD currency pair showing minimal movement.

Investors also assessed minutes from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s September monetary policy meeting, which highlighted persistent concerns about inflation.

The minutes confirmed that policymakers unanimously approved a 25-basis-point interest rate increase, bringing the benchmark cash rate to 4.60%.

The decision marked the central bank’s fourth interest rate increase of the year.

According to the minutes, several inflation risks previously identified by policymakers had either materialized or were becoming more pronounced.

Consequently, the RBA left open the possibility of another interest rate increase if inflation proved more persistent than anticipated.

The central bank’s cautious position reflects the challenge of containing price pressures while maintaining economic stability.

Asian Forex Outlook Hinges on US CPI and Federal Reserve Policy

The outlook for Asian currencies remains closely linked to developments in US inflation, Treasury yields, and Federal Reserve monetary policy.

A stronger-than-expected CPI reading could reinforce expectations of tighter US monetary conditions, potentially supporting the dollar and placing additional pressure on regional currencies.

Conversely, softer inflation figures could ease concerns about further interest rate increases and create opportunities for Asian currencies to recover.

Geopolitical developments and elevated energy prices remain additional factors influencing investor sentiment.

For now, currency markets are likely to remain sensitive to economic data and changing interest rate expectations as investors prepare for the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision.
