Amazon Cuts Jobs in Artificial General Intelligence Division
Amazon reduced jobs in its artificial general intelligence group on Wednesday, continuing a series of smaller workforce cuts across the company.
The latest reductions follow Amazon’s much larger restructuring in January, when the company eliminated approximately 16,000 positions across its operations.
What Is Artificial General Intelligence?
Artificial general intelligence, commonly known as AGI, refers to a theoretical AI system capable of learning, reasoning and completing a wide range of tasks independently.
Unlike current artificial intelligence tools, which are usually designed for specific functions, AGI would aim to match or exceed human abilities across multiple areas.
Several leading technology companies are investing heavily in AGI research. They hope that advanced AI systems could eventually help solve complex scientific, economic and technological problems.
Amazon Refocuses Its AI Strategy
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the company had eliminated some positions within parts of its AGI organization.
The spokesperson said Amazon has been developing large AI models for several years and continues to view the technology as one of its most important priorities.
However, the company is narrowing its focus toward projects that provide the greatest value to customers. Amazon said this shift required difficult decisions, including the removal of certain roles.
Leadership Changes Affect Amazon’s AGI Group
The job cuts follow several major leadership changes within Amazon’s artificial intelligence operations.
Rohit Prasad, a senior executive who previously led Amazon’s AGI efforts, left the company at the end of last year.
David Luan, who headed Amazon’s AGI Lab, also departed in February.
In December, Amazon consolidated its AGI operations under Senior Vice President Peter DeSantis. His broader organization also oversees semiconductor development and quantum computing.
The restructuring suggests that Amazon is bringing several advanced technology projects under a more centralized leadership structure.
Employees Report Impact From the Layoffs
Employees working under Adeeb Shanaa, vice president of AGI data services, and Vishal Sharma, vice president of AGI information, reported being affected by the cuts.
Several workers discussed the layoffs on online forums on Wednesday. However, Amazon did not immediately disclose the total number of positions eliminated.
Therefore, the full scale of the restructuring remains unclear.
Amazon Continues Broader Workforce Reductions
The latest layoffs are smaller than Amazon’s company-wide job cuts in January.
Nevertheless, they show that the technology giant is continuing to review its workforce and investment priorities.
Amazon remains committed to artificial intelligence, but the company appears to be directing resources toward fewer, more strategically important AGI projects.
The changes also highlight the growing pressure on major technology companies to balance heavy AI investment with cost control and operational efficiency.
