Alibaba Group unveiled a new artificial intelligence chip on Tuesday, calling it the most powerful AI processor currently developed in China.
The Chinese technology giant also announced plans for a major expansion of its data center capacity over the coming years.
Alibaba Launches the Zhenwu V900 AI Chip
Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu introduced the new Zhenwu V900 accelerator during the company’s annual Apsara Conference in Hangzhou.
According to Wu, the V900 delivers around three times the performance of its predecessor, the Zhenwu M890.
He also said the chip can be connected in clusters of up to 500,000 units.
This would allow Alibaba to use the processors to train advanced frontier AI models at a much larger scale.
Wu described the Zhenwu V900 as the most powerful AI chip currently available in China.
Alibaba Plans Major Data Center Expansion
The new processor will play a central role in Alibaba’s wider AI infrastructure strategy.
The company plans to expand its data center capacity to more than 20 gigawatts by 2032.
That scale of expansion highlights Alibaba’s ambition to compete aggressively in artificial intelligence infrastructure, cloud computing and advanced model training.
Alibaba Targets a 10-Trillion-Parameter AI Model
Alibaba is also planning to significantly increase the size and capabilities of its AI models.
Wu said the company aims to train a model containing as many as 10 trillion parameters.
Alibaba’s Qwen development team is also exploring recursive self-improvement, which could allow future AI systems to improve their own capabilities over time.
The initiative forms part of Alibaba’s broader push to strengthen its position in the global generative AI market.
AI Demand Boosts Alibaba Cloud
Wu said customer demand for AI services remains exceptionally strong.
That demand is helping drive faster revenue growth at Alibaba Cloud.
The company has invested tens of billions of dollars in artificial intelligence, including the development of its flagship Qwen model family.
Alibaba is now widely regarded as one of China’s leading AI developers.
Alibaba Pushes Into Home-Grown AI Chips
The company has also increased investment in its own AI processors.
This strategy has become more important as China looks to reduce its dependence on foreign semiconductor technology.
Beijing has encouraged domestic technology companies to develop more advanced home-grown AI chips and computing infrastructure.
Alibaba’s Zhenwu V900 fits directly into that broader strategy.
Heavy AI Spending Weighs on Profits
Alibaba’s aggressive AI investment has come at a cost.
The company’s recent quarterly net profit fell 75%, partly because higher spending on artificial intelligence compressed margins.
However, Alibaba’s AI cloud and computing revenue rose sharply during the June quarter.
That growth suggests the company is beginning to see stronger commercial demand from its large investment in AI infrastructure.
Alibaba Shares Rise After AI Announcement
Investors responded positively to the latest announcements.
Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares climbed around 4% on Tuesday.
The move reflected growing market optimism around the company’s AI chip strategy, cloud expansion and plans to develop significantly larger artificial intelligence models.
