The US dollar remained largely stable on Monday as investors prepared for a crucial week of political and economic developments, led by the US midterm elections. The vote could reshape the balance of power in Congress and significantly influence Washington’s fiscal policies.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin and Ethereum continued to recover from last week’s losses following a record $6.3 billion cryptocurrency theft at Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange.
Financial markets are also anticipating the release of October’s US employment report and interest rate decisions from central banks in Australia, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Sweden.
US Dollar Holds Steady as Midterm Elections Approach
Currency markets showed limited movement during early Asian trading as investors avoided significant positions ahead of Tuesday’s US congressional elections.
The US Dollar Index, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, remained steady around 101.94.
The euro traded near $1.1159, hovering close to its lowest level in 17 months. The European currency faced additional pressure after Fitch Ratings downgraded its outlook on France from stable to negative following Friday’s market close.
The British pound also showed little movement, trading around $1.3387.
Investors are closely monitoring whether the Democratic Party can secure control of Congress from President Donald Trump’s Republicans.
While forecasts suggest Democrats have a strong opportunity to win the House of Representatives, the Senate race remains considerably less predictable.
Congressional Election Results Could Reshape US Economic Policy
The outcome of the US midterm elections could have important implications for government spending, infrastructure investment, and financial markets.
Eric Robertsen, global head of research and chief strategist at Standard Chartered, cautioned that strong voter dissatisfaction with incumbent politicians does not necessarily guarantee corresponding election results.
He pointed to recent political developments in Brazil and Israel as examples of how electoral outcomes can differ from expectations.
According to Robertsen, a Democratic victory in both chambers of Congress could create additional regulatory and political challenges for major investment projects, particularly data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
He also warned that future negotiations over increasing the US debt ceiling could become exceptionally contentious under such a scenario.
Market vulnerability remains another concern.
Andreja Cobeljic, head of derivatives trading at AMINA Bank, noted that hedge funds suffered considerable losses during October. As a result, financial markets may have limited capacity to absorb unexpected political developments or sharp changes in investor sentiment.
Australian Dollar Awaits Key Central Bank Decision
Elsewhere in foreign exchange markets, the Japanese yen weakened approximately 0.15%, trading around 157.78 per US dollar.
The Australian dollar remained relatively unchanged at $0.7033 as investors awaited Tuesday’s monetary policy announcement from the Reserve Bank of Australia.
Market expectations point toward another interest rate increase, potentially lifting Australia’s benchmark cash rate to 4.85%, its highest level in nearly two decades.
Meanwhile, the New Zealand dollar declined 0.11% to $0.5625.
The currency had already lost approximately 1.2% during the previous week after the Reserve Bank of New Zealand unexpectedly decided to keep interest rates unchanged.
These central bank decisions, combined with US political developments and upcoming employment figures, could generate increased volatility across global currency markets.
Bitcoin and Ethereum Recover After Massive Binance Hack
Cryptocurrency markets remained under pressure following the unprecedented $6.3 billion security breach at Binance.
Bitcoin rose approximately 0.22% to $77,975.62 after declining to a six-week low on Friday.
Ethereum also posted a modest recovery, gaining 0.27% to trade around $2,268.42. The second-largest cryptocurrency had previously fallen to its lowest level in two months.
The market disruption followed a major cyberattack against Binance, which US authorities have linked to hackers associated with North Korea.
Following the exchange’s return to operation on Sunday, customers reportedly withdrew approximately $3.64 billion, equivalent to 2.1% of Binance’s total assets.
Despite the substantial outflows, Binance stated that withdrawal activity had begun stabilizing after an initial surge.
The company also reported that cryptocurrency deposits remained significant, suggesting continued activity on the platform despite the security concerns.
Binance Says 95% of Stolen Cryptocurrency Assets Are Covered
Binance announced that it had replenished or otherwise covered approximately 95% of the $6.3 billion in assets affected by the cyberattack.
The exchange has been working to restore customer asset backing while managing withdrawal demand and addressing the consequences of the breach.
However, the incident has renewed concerns about security vulnerabilities across the cryptocurrency industry, particularly those involving centralized exchanges and employee access to critical systems.
Richard Forss, chief technology officer at global prime broker EXANTE, highlighted a fundamental weakness in the industry’s security infrastructure.
Although blockchain networks have invested heavily in cryptographic protection, the broader ecosystem remains exposed to security failures involving employees and their devices.
According to Forss, the assumption that employee computers can be trusted has become a particularly vulnerable element of digital financial infrastructure.
Investors Brace for a Volatile Week Across Financial Markets
The combination of US midterm elections, central bank announcements, employment data, and uncertainty surrounding the Binance hack creates a potentially volatile environment for global financial markets.
For currency traders, the election results and monetary policy decisions could determine the dollar’s next major direction.
Meanwhile, cryptocurrency investors will be monitoring Bitcoin’s price recovery, Binance’s withdrawal activity, and the exchange’s progress toward fully restoring affected assets.
With several major economic and political events approaching, market participants are likely to remain cautious until greater clarity emerges.
