Gold prices climbed for a second consecutive session on Friday, reaching their highest level in one week as declining oil prices supported demand for the precious metal.

Meanwhile, investors continued to evaluate the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook amid persistent inflation concerns and uncertainty surrounding global energy markets.

Spot gold advanced 1.5% to $4,193.94 per ounce by 13:40 ET (17:40 GMT). Meanwhile, US gold futures rose 1.5% to $4,218.97 per ounce.

The latest gains also placed gold on track to finish the week higher, despite renewed strength in the US dollar and expectations of tighter monetary policy.

Gold Prices Rise Despite Stronger US Dollar

Gold prices maintained their upward momentum even as the US dollar resumed its rally following a brief pause.

A stronger dollar typically creates pressure on precious metals because it makes dollar-denominated commodities more expensive for international buyers.

However, bullion continued to attract investor interest as financial markets assessed developments in oil prices and monetary policy.

Analysts at ING suggested that any weakness in the US dollar could remain limited.

According to the bank, fragile bond markets and the Federal Reserve’s hawkish policy stance may prevent significant or sustained declines in the American currency.

Consequently, currency movements could remain an important factor influencing gold prices in the coming sessions.

Falling Oil Prices Support Gold Amid Middle East Tensions

Oil prices moved lower on Friday after President Donald Trump indicated that the United States would not launch an attack against Iran before November’s midterm elections.

The announcement helped ease some immediate concerns about further disruptions to global energy supplies.

Nevertheless, crude oil prices have experienced significant volatility throughout the week.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to raise concerns about potential interruptions to oil production, transportation, and international supply chains.

Higher energy prices have also intensified inflation fears across major economies.

As a result, investors are closely monitoring developments in the region for their potential impact on commodity markets and central bank policies.

Federal Reserve Rate Outlook Remains a Key Driver for Gold

The Federal Reserve’s monetary policy trajectory remains one of the most important factors shaping the gold market outlook.

Persistently elevated inflation has increased expectations that central banks may continue raising interest rates to control consumer prices.

In September, the Federal Reserve increased borrowing costs as policymakers sought to contain inflationary pressures.

The decision reinforced expectations that US monetary policy could remain restrictive for an extended period.

For gold investors, this creates a challenging environment because higher interest rates typically increase the attractiveness of interest-bearing assets.

Unlike bonds or savings accounts, physical gold does not generate interest income.

Therefore, rising yields can increase the opportunity cost of holding bullion and potentially limit further price gains.

Fed Official Signals More Interest Rate Hikes May Be Necessary

St. Louis Federal Reserve President Alberto Musalem reinforced expectations of additional monetary tightening during remarks on Thursday.

Musalem indicated that further interest rate increases may be necessary to return inflation to the central bank’s 2% target within a reasonable timeframe.

He also suggested that borrowing costs could need to rise further over the next six to nine months.

However, Musalem did not specify whether he would support an additional rate increase at the Federal Reserve’s upcoming October 27–28 meeting.

His comments highlight the challenges facing policymakers as they attempt to contain inflation while maintaining economic stability.

They also suggest that financial markets may need to prepare for an extended period of elevated interest rates.

CME FedWatch Shows Strong Expectations for Further Tightening

Financial markets are increasingly pricing in the possibility of additional Federal Reserve interest rate increases.

According to CME FedWatch data cited in the report, traders assigned an 18% probability to a rate hike at the October meeting.

Meanwhile, expectations for a December rate increase were considerably stronger, with the reported probability reaching 82%.

These market expectations reflect growing concerns that inflation may remain above the Federal Reserve’s target.

However, the outlook could change as new inflation reports, employment figures, and economic indicators become available.

Investors will therefore continue monitoring upcoming US economic releases for clues about the direction of monetary policy.

Gold Price Outlook: Investors Watch Inflation, Oil and Fed Policy

Despite the challenging interest rate environment, gold prices have demonstrated resilience by advancing to a one-week high.

Lower oil prices have provided some support, while geopolitical uncertainty continues to influence investor sentiment.

Nevertheless, the renewed strength of the US dollar and expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening could create resistance to additional gains.

Looking ahead, gold traders will closely follow developments in the Middle East, movements in Treasury yields, and signals from Federal Reserve officials.

The upcoming October 27–28 policy meeting could prove particularly important for determining the short-term direction of gold prices.

For now, bullion remains supported by its recent upward momentum, although uncertainty surrounding inflation and US monetary policy continues to shape the broader precious metals outlook.
