Bitcoin fell sharply below $84,000 on Wednesday as a sudden market pullback triggered more than $500 million in crypto long liquidations.
BTC dropped as much as 2.3% over a two-hour period before recovering slightly toward the $84,000 level.
The move also drew attention to a series of highly leveraged Bitcoin short positions opened on Hyperliquid shortly before the decline.
Bitcoin Falls to $83,560
Bitcoin briefly dropped to around $83,560 during the selloff.
Despite the decline, BTC managed to remain close to its 21-day simple moving average, which currently sits near $83,850.
That level has become an important short-term support zone for Bitcoin traders.
The selloff followed increased selling pressure around the $86,500 area, which prevented Bitcoin from extending its previous upside move.
Crypto Liquidations Reach $550 Million
The sharp Bitcoin decline triggered a wave of leveraged position closures across the crypto market.
According to CoinGlass data, total long liquidations over the previous 24 hours reached approximately $550 million.
Long liquidations occur when leveraged traders betting on higher prices are forced to close their positions as the market moves against them.
Large liquidation events can accelerate price declines because exchanges automatically sell positions once margin requirements are no longer met.
Hyperliquid Bitcoin Shorts Draw Attention
Market observers also focused on several large Bitcoin short positions opened shortly before the drop.
Onchain data highlighted by Lookonchain showed that four wallets used USD Coin to open short positions totaling 148.49 BTC on Hyperliquid.
The positions reportedly used 40x leverage.
Their timing attracted attention because they appeared shortly before Bitcoin began its sharp decline.
However, the presence of those positions alone does not establish that they caused or anticipated the move through improper activity.
Bitcoin Open Interest Rebounds
Following the liquidation wave, Bitcoin open interest began rising again.
Data covering 21 exchanges showed total BTC open interest climbing from around $54.2 billion to $55.3 billion over a six-hour period.
The increase suggests that traders began adding new positions after Bitcoin reached its local lows.
A rebound in open interest following a sharp selloff can indicate renewed confidence, although it can also increase volatility if traders use high leverage.
Bitcoin Holds Key Short-Term Support
Despite trading lower on the day, Bitcoin continued to defend its 21-day moving average near $83,850.
This level has become an important technical reference for short-term traders.
A sustained move below it could increase pressure on BTC and expose lower support levels.
The next major area to watch sits near $82,500.
$82,500 Remains Critical for Bitcoin
The $82,500 region is viewed as an important support level for Bitcoin’s broader bullish structure.
It also forms part of an inverse head-and-shoulders pattern that remains visible on the weekly chart.
Bitcoin last tested this area on September 28.
Holding above $82,500 could help preserve the current bullish structure, while a decisive break lower could weaken the technical outlook.
Bitcoin Needs to Reclaim $86,700
Crypto analyst Rekt Capital highlighted $86,700 as another key level for Bitcoin.
According to his analysis, BTC needs to secure a daily or three-day close above this area to confirm further upside momentum.
For now, Bitcoin remains below that resistance level, meaning the market has yet to provide a clear bullish confirmation.
The next major move may depend on whether Bitcoin can hold support near $83,850 and $82,500 before attempting another breakout above $86,700.
