Looking for the biggest crypto news today? The market is seeing major developments across Ethereum, blockchain projects and investor adoption.

BitMine has set a firm limit on its Ether holdings, Pudgy Penguins-backed Abstract is preparing to shut down, and a new CoinShares survey shows that digital assets now represent a significant share of wealthy investors’ portfolios.

BitMine Sets 5% Ether Supply Limit

BitMine Immersion Technologies plans to cap its Ether holdings at 5% of Ethereum’s total supply.

Chairman Tom Lee confirmed the target during a keynote at Token2049 in Singapore on Wednesday.

BitMine currently holds around 6 million ETH, equal to approximately 4.9% of Ethereum’s supply. The company needs roughly another 100,000 ETH to reach its target.

Lee made clear that the 5% threshold will act as a firm ceiling and that BitMine does not currently plan to accumulate beyond that level.

The position represents a change from previous comments.

Earlier this year, Lee suggested BitMine could eventually consider owning more than 5% of Ethereum’s supply if adoption continued to accelerate. He had indicated that the company could revisit that possibility in 2027.

Pudgy Penguins-Backed Abstract to Shut Down

Abstract, an Ethereum layer-2 blockchain backed by Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo Inc., plans to close after failing to establish a sustainable business model.

The project said its focus on consumer-focused crypto products did not generate enough long-term growth.

Abstract launched its mainnet in January 2025 with the goal of making blockchain technology easier to use for mainstream consumers.

Its strategy focused heavily on entertainment and simplified user experiences.

However, Igloo Inc. CEO Luca Netz said the company had spent tens of millions of dollars funding and developing Abstract without finding strong product-market fit.

Abstract Struggled With Liquidity and Institutional Demand

Abstract’s difficulties highlight some of the challenges facing consumer-focused blockchain projects.

The network struggled with limited institutional participation, low liquidity and a relatively small decentralized finance ecosystem.

These weaknesses made it difficult for the project to scale despite attracting major brands and building a large community.

The shutdown shows that strong branding and user growth alone may not be enough to support a blockchain network without deeper financial activity and sustainable demand.

Crypto Reaches 10% of Wealthy Investor Portfolios

Meanwhile, cryptocurrency adoption continues to grow among affluent investors.

A CoinShares survey found that digital assets now account for around 10% of the average portfolio among wealthy investors surveyed.

The research included 2,230 investors with at least $500,000 in investable assets across the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland.

Crypto ownership exceeded 50% in every country included in the survey.

In four of those markets, ownership reached approximately 70%.

Investors Increasingly See Crypto as a Long-Term Asset

The survey also suggested that investor attitudes toward crypto are changing.

Long-term capital appreciation and portfolio diversification ranked as the main reasons for owning digital assets.

Short-term speculation ranked much lower.

Only around 6% of respondents primarily described themselves as short-term traders.

That suggests crypto is increasingly being treated as a strategic investment rather than purely a speculative trade.

Market Selloff Fails to Reduce Crypto Interest

Recent market weakness has also failed to significantly reduce investor interest.

Following February’s crypto downturn, more investors said the selloff increased their interest in digital assets than reduced it.

In five countries surveyed, at least 85% of existing crypto holders said they planned to increase their exposure this year.

That points to continued confidence among higher-net-worth investors despite periods of market volatility.

Bitcoin Remains the Main Entry Point

Bitcoin remains the most widely held cryptocurrency among investors.

Around 80% of crypto investors surveyed owned BTC.

However, most Bitcoin holders also invest in other digital assets.

About 89% of Bitcoin investors reported owning additional cryptocurrencies, suggesting that wealthy investors are increasingly diversifying across the broader crypto market.
