Need to catch up on what happened in crypto today? Here are the biggest developments affecting Bitcoin, Ethereum, blockchain, DeFi, Web3, and the wider digital asset market.

Today’s crypto news includes the planned shutdown of Pudgy Penguins-backed Abstract, growing crypto allocations among wealthy investors, and a major Ethereum interoperability test involving its mainnet and a layer-2 network.

Pudgy Penguins-Backed Abstract to Shut Down After Major Losses

Abstract, the consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network backed by Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo Inc., plans to shut down later this year.

The blockchain launched its mainnet in January 2025 and aimed to make crypto easier for mainstream users. Its strategy focused heavily on entertainment, consumer applications, and reducing the technical complexity often associated with blockchain technology.

However, the project struggled to achieve sustainable growth and product-market fit.

Igloo Inc. CEO Luca Netz revealed that the company had been financially supporting Abstract for roughly 18 months. Despite investing tens of millions of dollars, building a large team, attracting major brands, and growing a sizeable community, the project failed to establish a viable long-term business model.

Limited Liquidity Hurt Abstract’s Growth

Abstract’s consumer-first approach also faced several structural challenges.

According to the project, limited institutional participation, relatively weak liquidity, and a restricted DeFi ecosystem made it difficult for the network to expand.

The shutdown highlights how difficult it can be for blockchain networks to convert user growth and brand recognition into sustainable economic activity.

Crypto Reaches Around 10% of Wealthy Investor Portfolios

Crypto is also becoming a more significant part of portfolios held by affluent investors.

A CoinShares survey found that digital assets now represent roughly 10% of the average portfolio among the wealthy investors questioned. Furthermore, many existing crypto holders intend to increase their allocations.

The survey included 2,230 investors with at least $500,000 in investable assets across the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Crypto ownership exceeded 50% in every country included in the research. In four of those markets, ownership was close to 70%.

Investors Are Looking Beyond Short-Term Speculation

Perhaps more importantly, investor motivations appear to be changing.

Long-term capital appreciation and portfolio diversification were among the most common reasons for holding digital assets. Short-term speculation ranked much lower.

Only 6% of respondents primarily described themselves as short-term traders.

Meanwhile, the market downturn in February did little to damage longer-term demand. Across every country surveyed, more investors said the decline increased their interest in crypto than reduced it.

In five of the markets surveyed, at least 85% of existing digital asset investors said they planned to increase their positions this year.

Bitcoin Remains the Main Gateway Into Crypto

Bitcoin continues to dominate crypto portfolios.

Around 80% of surveyed crypto investors owned BTC. However, most Bitcoin holders were also diversified across other cryptocurrencies and digital assets.

In fact, 89% of Bitcoin investors also held additional digital assets.

This suggests that Bitcoin remains the primary entry point into crypto while increasingly acting as part of a broader digital asset portfolio.

Ethereum Tests Atomic Mainnet-to-Layer-2 Transaction

Ethereum developers are also making progress toward reducing fragmentation across the ecosystem.

The EEZ recently tested an atomic transaction connecting Ethereum’s mainnet with a layer-2 network.

EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña Díez described the test as the project’s first atomic cross-chain transaction between Ethereum layer 1 and layer 2.

Transaction records showed a cross-chain call involving 0.001 Ether (ETH), along with an update to the rollup’s state.

What Is an Atomic Transaction?

Atomic transactions allow several connected actions to operate as a single process.

Either every part of the transaction succeeds, or the entire operation is reversed if one component fails.

This feature could make interactions between Ethereum and its growing number of layer-2 networks considerably smoother.

Ethereum Wants to Reduce Layer-2 Fragmentation

EEZ developers previously explained that the framework is designed to allow Ethereum rollups to communicate with one another and with the mainnet within a single transaction.

Importantly, the system aims to achieve this without depending on traditional blockchain bridges.

Ethereum’s rapid layer-2 expansion has improved scalability, but it has also divided liquidity and applications across many separate networks.

Greater interoperability could help reconnect those markets and create a more unified Ethereum ecosystem.

Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst has previously highlighted this problem, noting that limited synchronous composability forces protocols to operate separate deployments on different layer-2 networks. As a result, liquidity can become fragmented across multiple markets.

Crypto Today: Key Takeaways

Today’s crypto developments highlight three important trends across the market.

Abstract’s planned shutdown shows that strong branding and community growth do not necessarily guarantee sustainable blockchain adoption. At the same time, wealthy investors appear increasingly comfortable treating crypto as a long-term portfolio allocation rather than simply a speculative trade.

Meanwhile, Ethereum developers continue working on solutions that could make its expanding layer-2 ecosystem more connected and efficient.

Together, these developments show how the crypto market is evolving across infrastructure, institutional adoption, and blockchain technology.
