President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he expects the United States and Iran to reach an agreement after the upcoming U.S. midterm elections in November.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said Tehran may be waiting to see how his political standing develops after the vote. However, he added that election polling would not influence his approach to the conflict.
US and Iran Remain at Odds Over Strait of Hormuz
Trump’s remarks come as Washington and Tehran remain locked in a dispute over the Strait of Hormuz.
Military exchanges between the two sides have eased in recent days, but tensions remain elevated.
The United States continues to maintain pressure on Iran through naval restrictions and economic measures. Meanwhile, concerns remain over threats to commercial shipping from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Trump Says Iran Deal Could Follow Midterms
During his UN speech, Trump said the United States faced a major decision over the future of relations with Iran.
He suggested that Washington could pursue a deal that would allow Iran to rebuild its economy and normalize relations. At the same time, he warned that the U.S. could take much stronger military action if negotiations failed.
Trump said he believed an agreement would likely come shortly after the midterm elections.
According to the president, Iranian officials may be waiting to see how the elections affect his political position before deciding whether to move forward.
Nuclear Issue Remains Central
Trump also stressed that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains his top priority.
He said election results would not affect that objective.
The president urged other countries to support U.S. efforts to economically isolate Iran until Tehran ends attacks on commercial shipping and abandons its nuclear ambitions.
Trump argued that coordinated international pressure could eventually reduce geopolitical tensions and push global oil prices lower.
Trump Calls for Broader International Support
The president used his UN address to encourage other nations to back Washington’s approach toward Iran.
He said a united international response could weaken Iran’s ability to threaten regional security and disrupt global trade routes.
Energy markets remain particularly sensitive to developments involving Iran because of the country’s proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.
Ukraine, AI and US Economy Also Discussed
Trump also addressed several other topics during his speech.
He repeated his view that the United States remains one of the world’s strongest economies and renewed his call for an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
The president also reiterated his support for continued development of artificial intelligence in the United States.
Greenland Agreement With Denmark
Trump additionally said that an agreement with Denmark concerning Greenland was expected to be signed later on Tuesday.
He said the United States planned to begin developing new military infrastructure in Greenland under the agreement.
According to Trump, Washington intends to build two large military bases in strategically important locations on the island.
The proposed expansion would strengthen the U.S. military presence in the Arctic, an area that has become increasingly important for global security and geopolitics.
