OpenAI Ads Are Now a $1 Billion Business

OpenAI said on Monday that its ChatGPT advertising business has reached an annualized revenue run rate of $1 billion. The milestone comes as advertiser adoption increases and the company expands its advertising platform into more international markets.

The company began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States earlier this year. Since then, OpenAI has gradually added more advertisers and expanded its reach, positioning advertising as a new source of revenue growth ahead of a potential initial public offering.

ChatGPT Ads Expand Into More Global Markets

Starting Monday, advertisers in India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa can purchase ChatGPT ads directly through OpenAI’s Ads Manager.

The platform was already available in the United States and allows businesses to create and manage advertising campaigns within ChatGPT.

OpenAI said Ads Manager has also helped attract more small and medium-sized businesses. These companies now account for a meaningful portion of ChatGPT’s advertising activity.

International Advertisers Gain Importance

OpenAI also revealed that advertisers outside the United States are contributing an increasing share of its advertising revenue.

However, the company did not provide specific figures showing how much revenue currently comes from international markets.

The expansion highlights OpenAI’s efforts to turn ChatGPT into a global advertising platform rather than relying mainly on the U.S. market.

Free and Go Users See ChatGPT Ads

OpenAI currently displays advertisements to users on ChatGPT’s free tier and its lower-cost Go subscription plan.

The company’s advertising business has grown quickly since its initial launch. In April, OpenAI said its U.S. advertising pilot had already exceeded $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks.

The latest $1 billion figure suggests that the advertising operation has scaled significantly as more businesses and markets have joined the platform.

OpenAI Takes On Google and Meta in Digital Advertising

Moving deeper into digital advertising places OpenAI in direct competition with some of the world’s largest technology companies.

Alphabet-owned Google and Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, generate hundreds of billions of dollars in advertising revenue each year.

OpenAI remains much smaller in comparison. However, ChatGPT’s large user base could give the company an opportunity to build a significant new advertising ecosystem if adoption continues to grow.

Advertising Could Support OpenAI Ahead of an IPO

Advertising could become an increasingly important part of OpenAI’s broader revenue strategy.

The company reportedly filed confidentially for a U.S. initial public offering earlier this year. Reports have suggested that OpenAI could potentially go public in 2027 or even sooner.

A rapidly growing advertising business could therefore strengthen OpenAI’s revenue diversification as the company prepares for its next phase of expansion.
