Retail investors became net sellers of SpaceX stock on Friday for the first time since the company’s June IPO, according to data from Vanda Research.
Individual traders sold a net $4.5 million worth of SpaceX shares on August 7. It was the first negative daily retail flow recorded since the company went public on June 12.
SpaceX Retail Investors Shift to Selling
The latest selling represents a notable change in sentiment among individual investors.
However, the amount remains relatively small compared with the heavy buying activity seen shortly after the SpaceX IPO.
Retail investors recorded their largest single-day net purchase on June 16, when they bought approximately $144.6 million worth of SpaceX shares.
That figure highlights the significant enthusiasm that surrounded the stock during its first days of public trading.
Retail Traders Previously Bought the Dip
Friday’s selling came just two days after retail investors briefly returned to buying.
On August 5, individual traders purchased SpaceX shares as the stock plunged 13.6%.
That session became the fourth-largest day of net retail buying since the IPO, suggesting that many investors viewed the sharp decline as a potential buying opportunity.
SpaceX Earnings Trigger Sharp Stock Decline
The August 5 sell-off followed SpaceX’s first quarterly earnings report since becoming a publicly traded company.
The results highlighted faster returns from the company’s artificial intelligence investments.
However, investors continued to question how long profits from SpaceX’s Starlink business could support the company’s growing AI-related spending.
Those concerns contributed to increased volatility in SpaceX stock following the earnings announcement.
SpaceX Stock Erases Post-IPO Gains
SpaceX shares initially surged after their market debut.
The stock climbed as much as 67% above its $135 IPO price during June as investors rushed to gain exposure to Elon Musk’s space and satellite company.
However, that momentum has since reversed.
By August, SpaceX shares had erased their post-IPO gains and fallen more than 22% below the original $135 offering price.
The stock has also traded below its IPO price during every session since July 16.
SpaceX Shares Rise in Premarket Trading
Despite the recent weakness, SpaceX stock showed signs of a rebound on Monday.
Shares gained around 2.5% in premarket trading as investors assessed the recent decline and shifting retail sentiment.
The key question now is whether retail investors will return to buying after the sell-off or whether Friday’s move toward net selling signals a more lasting change in sentiment.
With SpaceX shares well below their IPO price, retail trading activity could remain an important indicator of investor confidence in the weeks ahead.
