SBI Holdings, one of Ripple’s closest banking partners in Asia, is expanding its blockchain strategy beyond the XRP Ledger and RippleNet.
The Japanese financial group has restructured one of its wholly owned subsidiaries to focus on institutional on-chain finance through the Canton Network. The move suggests that SBI is adopting a broader, multi-chain approach while continuing its long-standing relationship with Ripple.
SBI Establishes Dedicated Canton Network Business
SBI Holdings announced that SBI Security Solutions Co., Ltd. has been renamed SBI Digital Practice Co., Ltd. The name change took effect on June 22, 2026.
The Tokyo-based subsidiary is fully owned by SBI Holdings and will operate as a dedicated financial services business built around the Canton Network.
SBI said the restructuring reflects its long-term vision for on-chain finance. As blockchain technology becomes more widely used for financial products and transactions, SBI Digital Practice will help financial institutions develop compliant blockchain systems and increase institutional adoption.
New Subsidiary to Support Financial Institutions
SBI Digital Practice will provide end-to-end support to financial companies looking to use blockchain technology.
Its services will include developing financial infrastructure, applications and operational systems on the Canton Network. The subsidiary will also assist domestic and international institutions with blockchain implementation.
In addition, the company plans to develop platforms that support cross-border and cross-currency transactions.
Its main business areas will include on-chain financial services, business development, system construction and ongoing operations. SBI has also been exploring blockchain-based international payments through a previous stablecoin partnership with Fasset.
Is SBI Moving Beyond Ripple and the XRP Ledger?
The announcement is significant because SBI has maintained close ties with Ripple for many years.
In 2016, SBI Holdings and Ripple created SBI Ripple Asia to promote RippleNet-based cross-border payments throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The joint venture has played an important role in encouraging institutional adoption of Ripple’s payment technology and the XRP Ledger.
However, SBI’s latest restructuring indicates that its institutional blockchain strategy will not depend on a single network.
This does not necessarily mean that SBI is abandoning Ripple. Instead, the company appears to be expanding its digital asset operations by adding the Canton Network to its existing blockchain infrastructure.
SBI Continues Supporting XRPL Projects
SBI Ripple Asia reaffirmed its support for the XRP Ledger only months before the Canton Network announcement.
The company recently became a registered third-party prepaid payment instrument issuer in Japan. It also introduced a token issuance platform on the XRP Ledger in April 2026.
The platform enables businesses to create digital tokens while complying with relevant regulatory requirements.
These developments indicate that XRP Ledger-based services remain part of SBI’s strategy, even as the company explores additional blockchain ecosystems.
Canton Network Attracts Major Financial Institutions
SBI expects institutional demand for the Canton Network to continue growing.
According to the company, the network has more than 600 participating institutions. These reportedly include Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, Broadridge, Franklin Templeton and Euroclear.
SBI also stated that assets valued at more than $6 trillion are connected to the network.
The company highlighted DTCC’s adoption of Canton for the digital securitization of US Treasury bonds as further evidence that major financial institutions are increasingly exploring blockchain-based infrastructure.
SBI Embraces a Multi-Chain Finance Strategy
SBI remains one of Ripple’s most important strategic partners. Nevertheless, the restructuring shows that the Japanese financial group is preparing for a future in which institutional finance operates across multiple blockchain networks.
Rather than relying exclusively on RippleNet or the XRP Ledger, SBI appears to be building a wider on-chain finance ecosystem.
This approach could allow the company to serve more financial institutions, support different digital asset use cases and capture a larger share of the growing real-world asset and institutional blockchain markets.
